Well, happy Easter. >> Happy Easter to you, too. >> Yes. Happy You Why do you think I'm saying happy Easter? Wasn't that last week? >> Um, isn't it Easter Sunday for a few weeks? >> That's exactly right. It's going to be We're We're having Easter is more than just one day. Easter is a 50-day season. So, we're still in the season of Easter right now. That's why it's worth celebrating. So, I got to ask you a quick question today. Have you ever asked a question and then not didn't get a great answer? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> I imagine you have. I imagine. Yeah. >> What kinds of questions can you think of that you've asked with without getting a great answer right away? >> Where was I before I was born? >> That's that's quite that's a strong question. Where where were you before you were born? >> Where is Jesus? if we can't see him or if he's not or he's not there right at that moment. >> Where is Jesus if we can't see? That's a great question. What? >> Oh, you go ahead. I had this really I had another one. I asked Google, "Why do do move?" Because this little monster over here has been he moved a lot and then Google's like giving me the worst answer. >> So, yeah, living in the gray a little bit. It's an unknown thing, right? We don't we don't always get the answers we're looking for. >> Sometimes there's a little mystery, right? Well, today as we continue to celebrate Easter, we hear about one of Jesus's friends, Jesus's friends, Thomas. And Thomas, he didn't get to be a part of one of Jesus's appearances, you know. And so he was he had questions and he was able to to bring his question to bring his wondering to bring his doubt straight to Jesus and know that Jesus would stay with him and that Jesus would still be there. Jesus would still love him no matter what kind of questions or doubts or wondering he has. So, you know what that means for us? When we have questions, maybe questions about our faith, questions about Jesus, questions about life, we can always bring those to God and know that God loves us through all our questions, all our doubts, no matter what. Yes. >> Oh, yes. Yeah. That's it's that's tough. We have to live with a lot of difficult questions. So let us pray. Dear God, >> Dear God, >> thank you for the gift of Jesus. >> Thank you for the gift of Jesus. >> And the questions of Thomas >> and the questions of Thomas >> that assure us >> that assure us >> you always love us. >> You always love us. >> And you're always here for us. >> You're always here for us. >> In Jesus name. >> in Jesus name. >> Amen. All right. Now, before you go here, I do have back here a little basket. If I can stand around. Oh, there we go. I know we have a we have a helper here. Thank you, Dawson. So, because it's still Easter, how about you grab one of these eggs? >> Yeah. And happy Easter. >> That That didn't Oh, yeah. Oops. Uhoh. You okay? >> The same thing is in every pull that off of your head right there. >> Stand up. Okay. The first reading is from Acts chapter 22 through32. A reading from Acts. Peter standing with the 11 raised his voice and addressed the crowd. Fellow Israelites, listen to what I have to say. Jesus of Nazareth, a manner attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him. To you, among you, as yourselves, know this man handed over to you according to the defiant plan, the fornowledge of God. you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having released his him from the agony of death because it was impossible for him to be held by in in its power. For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me. For he is at my right hand, so I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover, my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades or let your holy one experience con contraption. You have made known to me that ways of life that you will fill me with glad with gladness for with your presence. F fellow Israelites, I may say to you that confidently of our ancestor David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would be put one of the his descendants on this throne. For seeing this, David spoke of the res resurrection of the Messiah, saying he was not abandoned to Sades, nor did his flesh experience corruption. This Jesus God raised up and that is all of us are witnesses. Christ is risen. This is this is the word of the life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to God. >> Next, we'll read Psalm 16 responsibly. Protect me, oh God, for I will take you. I'll take refuge. >> I say to the Lord, you are my Lord. I have no good apart from you. >> As for the holy ones in the land, there are noble ones in whom is all my delight. >> Those who choose another god multip. The Lord has chosen portion in my cup. You hold me my lot. >> I have heritage. >> I bless the Lord who gives me counsel. In the night also my heart instructs me. >> I keepord. >> Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. My God, my my body also rests secure. >> You you show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy. In your right hand are pleasures forever more. The second reading is from Peter chapter 1 verse 3-9. A reading from first Peter. Blessed be God and the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. By his mercy, he has given us a new birth to into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ un from the dead and into inheritance that is imperishable and undefilled and through and the through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if for now, even if now for a little while you have to suffer various trials, so that the genuine the genuiness of your faith being more precious than the gold that though perishable is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory through honor and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him indescribable in the glorious joy. For you are receiving the outcome of your face and the salvation of your souls souls. Christ is risen. The word of the life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to God. >> Halleluah. Lord and Savior come and help your sire within us. King of our hearts are Lord we sing for the good news. The Holy Gospel according to John. >> Glory to you, Lord. >> When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained." But Thomas, who was called the twin, one of the twel, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails in my hand in his side, I will not believe." A week later, his disciples were again in the house. And Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt, but believe. Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God." Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet come to believe." Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Christ. You may be seated. In the name of God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Well, happy preschool Sunday, everybody. It is uh so wonderful to have our our preschool families here, our preschool students, our great preschool teachers. So, thank you so much for being here and for really making our community so much richer. We we are grateful for each of you. Just a couple days ago, I was uh sitting in the Atlanta airport following my post Easter trip and I got a text message from my mother to try to find a TV if I could because the crew from Artemis 2 was about to land. And for those of you who joined uh our Holy Week, you may recall that I began a sermon talking about Artemis 2. So clearly it's been a bit of a fixation. Uh, so I'm mentioning it once again, but it's just been absolutely incredible to watch. And so with my my phone in hand, I was just sitting in amazement as this vessel went from outer space and then it barreled down toward Earth at about 25,000 mph, which is 30 times the speed of sound before gently with the help of parachutes landing in the ocean right outside of San Diego. it. It's just amazing the pictures that they took when they were orbiting the moon. These are the astronauts who have traveled further than any other human before. The pictures are incredible. They'll take your breath away. Truly, to see the Earth as very much a pale blue dot with the darkness all around it really puts things in perspective. I think for example, if you're dealing with something that seems allconsuming or it seems crushing or just impossible, this to me is something that puts all of this in perspective when you realize just the smallalness of the world and in the scope of the whole universe. It's just truly amazing. But more than the images and videos of our planet and the moon, I was struck by the public comments of the astronauts themselves. The public comments that just took place yesterday at uh at a press conference as they were reflecting on their journey. And the astronaut Christina who was a part of this trip talked about their closeness, how being a part of this crew, you you really you you were linked together through it all, through the good, the bad, the ups and the downs, through all the preparation and the training. And because of that, a crew very much functioned as as one unit. A crew was very much by its very nature connected. The crew was connected and as they looked down at planet Earth, that's us 252,000 miles away with our planet spinning in the black. This mission made Christina the astronaut realize that all of us on Earth are also a crew. We're a crew here because we're in this together. Human beings, we're all in this together. We're connected to one another whether or not we want to be by our very humanity. We're connected because we're we're humans. We're God's children together. The Gospel of John, more than really any other gospel, makes this known to us the importance of community and relationship through the power of Jesus. Yes. but also through the power of his Holy Spirit. And now as we continue to celebrate our Easter season that we celebrate and we proclaim that Jesus was born and Jesus was crucified and Jesus was resurrected for us and for the whole world. John's message of God's love for us, for the whole world is apparent in the prologue, that very first chapter of John's gospel when we hear about the word that became flesh and then tabernacled among us. It's apparent most notably in John 3:16 when we hear, "For God so loved the world." the world. The message and the ministry of Jesus are not reserved for his followers, his disciples 2,000 years ago. The message of Jesus is just as much relevant for them and for your children and for your children's children and for us as it has ever been. God's love for us, made known to us through Jesus Christ, keeps us going. the love of God made known to us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That's that's why we're here. And this Sunday, this preschool Sunday, we hear the story that's appointed every year for us. The Sunday immediately following Easter, we hear of two resurrection encounters of Jesus. The first with the disciples who were locked away behind closed doors and then the second the second to Thomas. Thomas with that very unfortunate nickname that has stuck around for so long. Doubting Thomas. You know how you get a nickname and then you don't really love it, but it's yours. That's that's Thomas. Because I don't think that this nickname of calling Thomas doubtful is particularly helpful. Because remember, this story isn't just about encountering Jesus 2,000 years ago. It's about how Jesus continues to surprise us, continues to show up in all of the least expected kind of ways in our life here today now. And don't just take my word for it. Look at the last two verses of the gospel text right after we hear of Thomas's encounter with the risen Lord. These verses now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these signs these signs are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. What a perfect summary of John's gospel for each of us. And notice the tense of these verbs here. I think it's important. So that you may continue to believe. And that through believing. These uses of believe tell us something. They tell us something very important. that belief belief in God made known to us through Jesus Christ is it's an ongoing process. It's a journey. It's not always like the highs of last Sunday with the with the liies and the hallelu allelujah and the joy. But it's most certainly this journey is most certainly about life in his name. And sometimes it may be challenging. Today we celebrate the earliest parts of that journey. Life and belief that happens in the eyes and minds and hearts of our preschoolers. But we also celebrate belief through the dedication and the care and the love shown to them by our great teachers. But above all, in this Easter season that we find ourselves in right now, we recognize that we're all on this journey, this God-given journey together. We are God's people. We are connected to each other by our very humanity. We get the opportunity and the joy to share the love that was first given to us by God, with others, with everyone around us. And we are, as that astronaut said after the landing yesterday, we're very much a crew. And all of this, all of it is true and is possible because what happened after 3 days when people thought that all was done, all was lost. It's all possible because of our risen and our living Christ. But because faith, because belief is a journey, that means there are some imperfections. There are some missteps. There's maybe even some wrong turns along the way. But by the grace of God, we get to to maybe wipe our eyes or maybe we can take a deep breath or we can bow our heads in prayer because all of this all that we do and all that we encounter is given to us by our creator. It's a gift, pure gift. I was so delighted to to actually hear the astronauts talk about this while they're in space right before Easter, talking about the gifts of our creator, of our God. And what a gift it is for us here to see the many ways that the the goodness of God keeps showing up here among us. making his power and making his love known to each of us in big ways, yes, but also in small ways. Through the beauty of creation, of course, through our very planet. Through the many signs and the miracles that we get to encounter in John's gospel. Yes. Through the forgiveness and the grace that we are given, each of us are given week after week. Absolutely. through the power and the joy of the resurrection of Jesus's defeating death and the devil for us most certainly and through the eyes and the minds and the hearts of our preschoolers who maybe like Thomas enjoy questioning things a little bit. I love hearing them ask why. Why? Why do so many things that we've stopped questioning that we as maybe slightly older children assume are just knowledge? Assume knowledge we don't have to to worry about anymore. Our preschoolers, they have wonder. And with them asking why, we get the opportunity to discover the wonder of our God-given humanity. We get to discover again the love of God made known to us for us and by his grace by the the gift of Easter. We can also we can echo Thomas dumbfounded aruck yet fully in belief far from doubt with the strongest statement of belief to Jesus himself that we hear today declaring my Lord and my God. But this is a journey and we're not spacebound, but it's a journey certainly picking our feet back up when things don't go as we had hoped. And what an incredible mission statement we have for this journey that we get printed here in our bulletin today in the second reading from Peter, I mean truly the more times I hear this, I I I encourage you to just clip it out. Bring it with you. Clip it out. Look at it this week, it sums everything up perfectly. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope. Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you who are being protected by the power of God through faith for salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuiness of your faith being more precious than gold that though imper though perishable is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him. And even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice an indescribable and glorious joy. For you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Thanks be to God. He is risen. He is risen indeed. Allelujah and amen. Okay. So, Hallelujah. We give you thanks for Jesus who living among us, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and with a love stronger than death gave his life for others. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. And again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people, for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Christ again. Remembering therefore his lifegiving death and glorious resurrection, we await your promised life for all this dying world.
