Might be a might be someone else that uh that makes Easter even better. You think? Who's close to the Easter Bunny? >> Santa. >> Santa. Yeah, that's actually Well, well said. That is That is true. That's That's a good answer to that specific question. So, thank you. Yes. Well, today I'm thinking about Jesus. This is a great day. Yeah, that's right. Today we get to That's right. We get to celebrate Jesus today be because Jesus Jesus Yeah, exactly. He conquered death. He came out of the grave. There's a big earthquake we hear about this morning. You know what? And then what do you think Jesus says when everyone's afraid and there's this big earthquake. What do you think he says first thing? Do not be afraid. >> I am with you. >> Yeah. So Jesus, sometimes we can get a little scared, especially when Jesus pops up, right? You know, out of nowhere, we can get a little scared. It can be a jarring thing. But Jesus says, "Do not be afraid. Jesus always comes in peace because Jesus loves each and every one of you." That's something you always have to remember. No matter how afraid you feel, just remember that Jesus loves you. And that should hopefully help make you feel a little better, right? All right. Well, let us pray. Dear God, >> Dear God, >> thank you for this Easter day. >> Thank you for this Easter day >> and the gift of your risen son. >> Son >> and the peace that he gives us. >> And the peace that he gives us. >> In Jesus name. >> In Jesus name. >> Amen. All right. Well, happy Easter. I'm so glad you guys came up. Snacks and all. That's wonderful. What's that? The first reading is from the 10th chapter of Acts, beginning with the 34th verse. Peter began to speak to the people. I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every people, anyone who fears him and practices righteousness is acceptable to him. You know, the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ, he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee, after the baptism that John announced. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. How he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. For God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. But God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people, but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testified about him, that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. Christ is risen. This is the word of life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to God. We will now read Psalm 118 responsively. Oh, give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His steadfast love endures forever. >> His steadfast love endures forever. >> The Lord is my strength and my might. He has become my salvation. >> There are glad songs of victory in the right. The right of the Lord does well. The right hand of the Lord is exalted. The right hand of the Lord does valiantly. >> I shall not die and recount the deeds of the Lord. >> The the Lord has punished me severely, but he did not give me over to death. >> Open to me of that and give thanks to the Lord. >> This is the gate of the Lord. The righteous shall enter through it. >> I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. >> The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. >> This is the Lord's doing. It is marvelous in our eyes. >> This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. The second reading is from the third chapter of Colossians, beginning with the first verse. If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Christ is risen. This is the word of life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to God. Halleluah glorior single. good news. >> The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. >> Glory to you, Lord. >> After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descending from heaven came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him, the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised as he said, come see the place where he lay." Then go quickly and tell his disciples, "He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see him. This is my message for you." So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Greetings." And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers and sisters to go to Galilee. There they will see me. The Gospel of the Lord. >> Praise to you, O Christ. >> You may be seated. >> Well, in the name of God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. This morning, I have a question for you. Have you ever shot a beaver? Any takers? Well, maybe no. Hands will go up here. But I I personally have not shot a beaver. But I did learn recently why this is done uh from someone and why at times it is a necessary task. You see, beavers may appear cute and and harmless, but do some research, just a little bit of research on them, and you will learn that beavers are actually full-fledged engineers. They are relentless. They build dams. And while a dam might seem like kind of a small thing, the consequences, believe it or not, are are huge. A dam, it changes the landscape, sure, but a dam in many ways can change an ecosystem. At best, for some, perhaps the beaver or maybe the the Tennessee Valley Authority, there's a nice calm part of the water, and then at worst, things are much more consequential. Dams create on the other side somewhat of a a dead zone where where fish can't be where they're supposed to be and where life of a certain part of the river or the other body of water is just not working the way it should. So you have a living breathing stream and then suddenly because of a of a pile of sticks and mud and other things or maybe something much more concrete, the waters of life are blocked. Everything is secured. Everything is held back. March 20th, not too long ago, a couple weeks ago, was World Reing Day. World Reing Day. This all started after co I don't know if you remember during the lockdown time when you know we were stuck at home and we'd turn on the TV and then you'd see some of these incredible images of of like Los Angeles with wildlife that are roaming around the streets that normally would not be anywhere near there. They were places that you would never expect and it just was an amazing thing. And so this movement of scientists realized that if you want to bring a dead landscape back to life, you don't actually have to reinvent or invent new life. You just have to remove the barriers, remove whether it's human traffic or maybe it could be perhaps dams. You pull the sticks and the mud and all that stuff out and then the man-made barriers go away and all of a sudden life is restored to a certain area. There's a lot of this work that's taking place right now in South America. That's kind of where the world reing day is is is in full force. The the Jaguar River there and the moment uh the barrier is broken, the reing we hear about it begins. The water rushes in, the fish return, the birds follow. Uh certain ecos systems can then function as they were intended. But all of it starts with a heavyduty stubborn blockage. And this we know in the eyes of the world, Jesus was a living stream. He was fast flowing a fast flowing river of justice and mercy and reconciliation that the authorities desperately wanted to to dam up. They wanted to stop. They didn't use sticks and mud. Instead, they used a cross. And finally, when it was time to take his body down from that cross, they used a massive stone to cover the tomb that we hear about in today's text. In the chapter prior to to our gospel today in Matthew 27, we hear that Pilate gives a direct order. Make the tomb as secure as you know how. And to make matters even more secure, Pontious Pilate then ordered guards to stand watch at the tomb and to make sure that those guards would be able to see all the people that are coming and going. And Pilate insists that because Jesus of course during his life in ministry had mentioned a time or two a thing about resurrection that he would indeed rise again. He seemed pretty serious about this too. And I don't think I want to give Pilate the benefit of the doubt in putting the guards up purely because of the ability that Jesus would have to be resurrected. I don't think Pilate or anyone else knew exactly what was going on. Most likely what they were concerned about was some riffraff. Some riffraff messing with the tomb and then being able to say to to let the propaganda in their minds continue that yes, Jesus is resurrected all the while someone just moves the body to a different location. So the guards are there making sure that things are secure. Well, you see, despite the best plans that human beings make, sometimes sometimes, and I think we all know this, God has different things in mind. And sometimes God steps in in small and subtle ways to change the course of our lives. Perhaps you have a a small detour. you're sent to a place that you weren't quite expecting, whether it's a physical place or a a place in your your journey. But sometimes sometimes, like we hear today, God shakes things up and shakes things up in a big way, in a earthquake kind of way. The two Marys, they approach the tomb and they're weary and they're grieved. And then we hear about this great earthquake and then all of a sudden the Lord appears before them. This is so startling, so shocking that the guards hired to protect the supposedly dead Jesus, the body of Jesus, they become like dead men themselves. The protectors of death, the very hired guards of death then essentially look like dead men themselves. I can only imagine how amazing and how terrifying and how grand this was. The angel tells the two Marys that Jesus Jesus ain't there. Jesus is not there. And with apparent ease, the the angel then rolls back the stone of death. The stone that was sealed so tightly that no one could tamper with the body of Jesus. And then here's the best part. What does that angel do? The angel sits on it. The angel sits on this stone of death. God's angel sits on the plans of humankind. the plans that others made to protect and preserve their own power, their own dominion, that power of death, the angel of the Lord sits on it. The very thing, the very thing that was meant to seal the tomb, the very thing that said this is in fact over, the angel just sits on it like nothing. It's it's such a powerful image I think for you and for me because that massive stone I don't think that's just a detail in the gospel text. I don't think that's just kind of an interesting footnote. I think these massive stones are big old boulders that we have uh too. They're things that we have in our lives. We experience a similar type of roadblock stones like perhaps a a diagnosis that's not changing and you keep going to the doctor and you still can't get things quite figured out. Perhaps it is a grief that is lingering and despite having a great community of faith, the grief is still there. It's still a challenge. It's still difficult. Each day still difficult. Perhaps it's anxiety that's showing up in your life in a way that that maybe no one else knows. The thing in your life that feels like it's sealed, it's stuck, it's immovable, and it ain't good. It's not good at all. That that's a stone that we may be experiencing. And so on this Easter morning, this day of joy and the liies virtual and all of the the wonderful colorful folks and and and joy, we have a rather important message that those things, they're still very much real. Easter is not pretending otherwise. The stone was real. The death that Jesus experienced was real. But here is what we say today that those things do not have the final word. That is why when we hear from the angel, do not be afraid. When all is changing around them and this great disruption happens, the ground is shaking, the guards have collapsed, nothing is behaving like it's supposed to. We hear a word from heaven and it's not an explanation. It's not a nice guide uh for comfort. It's not a stepbystep breakdown of how the resurrection scientifically works. It's simple. It's do not be afraid. Do not be afraid because the one who you are looking for, nope, that one is not here. He has been raised. So notice this. The stone is not rolled away. So then Jesus can can get out. Jesus is already gone. Jesus is already out of the tomb. The stone is rolled away for them, for the people to see so that they can see what looked like the end. What looked like was sealed and guarded and untouchable. That that is not the end. And how do they respond? Matthew says that they leave with fear and great joy. fear and great joy, fear, joy, both. You know, a lot of times we might want to separate those feelings. Not one replacing the other, that's not what they're experiencing. Not joy erasing fear, they're not experiencing that, but both together. And this is important because despite resurrection happening, it doesn't mean that things are instantly tidied. That instantly makes sense that are instantly acceptable and great. There's a there's a both and here. Resurrection does not re remove or erase grief. It does not remove or erase a struggle that you may be experiencing. Resurrection simply and powerfully redefineses what these things mean, what their consequences are. Resurrection means that the things that we experience that are bad and that we think are the very end, they're not the end of the story. Resurrection means that death does not have the final word. And this I think this is where the story that we hear this morning, this gospel story very much becomes about us. It's not just something that we read about because many of us comfortably tell others and maybe even tell ourselves in times of trouble or despair or distress that God's ways are not our ways. Some things you just cannot explain. But do we actually do we believe this when things get real and difficult and and unbearable? Sometimes I think we have a hard time understanding this. when the diagnosis doesn't change, when that grief lingers, when the anxiety is keeping you up at night. I'm talking about your life right now, not something imagined that the parts that that still feel sealed and unreachable. And as we heard about in those South America rivers, the ecological dead zones, that's what those are. Easter is not about pretending that those things do not exist. Easter is about this that in Jesus Christ, God has already gone ahead of you. God has gone ahead of you into suffering, into death, into the worst thing imaginable for you and for your life. And then through it, Jesus goes ahead of you and comes out on the other side. And now, even when you cannot see it, even when it doesn't make sense, there is remarkably, miraculously an angel sitting on the stone. And so, here's the part that we cannot miss. Week after week, right here, right at St. John's we are brought back into this reality. We come walking in carrying some sort of stone of our life. Things that are weighing us down in a way that others may never know that block us from being witnesses to miracles. And then what what does God do? God gathers us together so we hear the word of God. God speaks to us. God feeds us with his very body. Not something symbolic, but his very self at that altar. It's not just a story. It's something that happens week after week here for you, for us. We receive the the living Christ given and shed for us. For the forgiveness of sins, yes. For for resurrection, yes. For life. Yes. For salvation. When the earth shook and that angel descended, God didn't just clear out a a little debris. God God blew the dam wide open. The stone, the barrier, it became a lounge chair for God's angel. It's an incredible image. And this is really the ultimate reing reing day. It's Easter. Whatever dam you are facing today, whatever stone or barrier, the diagnosis, whatever it may be, the anxiety, all of those things, know this. The stone has been moved away. The barrier, it's gone. Don't settle for that stagnant, damned up water. Trust the living water and the one who makes all things new, our Lord Jesus Christ. He is risen. He is risen indeed. Hallelujah. And thanks be to God. The Easter day Joy is bright. The sun shall light when their ly. Oh Jesus, king of gent. Gent for you will be that you all praise and glory. With the whole church we confess our faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontious Pilot. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, Catholic, and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. It is indeed right, our duty, and our joy that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our savior Jesus Christ, the true pascal lamb, who gave himself to take away our sin, who in dying has destroyed death and in rising has brought us to eternal life. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. And again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people, for the forgiveness of sin.
