This is a tale from

the Holy Quran. "This isn't God's word." "These are poems

by a fake poet." "Mohammad's poems." This is the tale of the fire, lit by a wife for her husband. "Any insult to Mohammad

gives me peace." "Slaves, spread out these

thorns in front of his house." This is the tale of the person, who humiliated the Messenger

SAW in the marketplace. "O people of Mecca, do not listen to him. He is my nephew, Mohammad. He has gone crazy!" "Look at the crazy person." This is the tale of Surah Lahab. "Perish the hands of the

Father of Flame! Perish he!" In Muslim families, children are

often forced to learn the Quran. Whether they

understand it or not, they should know the recitation

of the 4 Quls and Surah Lahab. "Tabbat yadaa abee

Lahabinw-wa tabb" Perhaps, this is why, we have the Holy Quran in our homes, but not in our hearts. What is Surah Lahab? "Did you hear Abu Minal? Allah SWT revealed a Surah

directed towards Abu Lahab." "Allah SWT is merciful." Who was Umm Jamil, mentioned

by Allah SWT in this chapter? "Sister Abiha, did you hear?" "What?" "Umm Jamil's necklace will be the noose

around her neck on the Day of Judgement." What had this couple done, that Allah SWT specifically

mentioned Abu Lahab in the Quran, and criticised them? "He says his God

will burn us in hell." "He says that I'll be made

to carry logs on my head." And more importantly, how is this Surah living proof of the Quran being miraculous? We'll discover

this in this video. His wife shall carry the

(crackling) wood - As fuel!- A twisted rope of palm-leaf

fibre round her (own) neck! Surah Lahab was

revealed in Mecca when Abu Lahab had crossed

all limits of cruelty. He would torment

Allah SWT's prophet. Would curse at him. Would humiliate

him in public squares. "My nephew turned his back

on the religion of his forefathers." "Preaches about

worshipping only his God." "I haven't heard

anything worse than this." But it all began when the sun

was just rising over Mecca. The camels were

running across the desert. Some might have been

admiring themselves in the mirror. Some were eating. Some might have

still been in their beds. "It's so late in the morning, but he's still in bed. What else does he do? Dear, are you going

to sleep the entire day?" But someone was

climbing the hill, Safa. "Who's climbing on the hill?" "Mohammad?" The people of Mecca climbed the

hill as a signal for others to gather. It was for important things only. After climbing Safa, Allah SWT's

messenger breathed deeply. And called out to everyone. "Oh, my people!" This wasn't a call to prayers. Nor was a hawker

trying to sell his fares. This signalled danger. A call to everyone

to listen very carefully. Call to signal danger. They left their homes, shops,

everything and gathered at the hill. Once everyone gathered

at the base of the hill, the Messenger of Allah

SWT looked at them all. He asked them a question. "O, my people, if I tell you, there's an army

behind this hill, coming to attack you, will you believe me?" People shouted at once, "Of course, we will." "Because you're always honest." "You're trustworthy." "You're profoundly sincere." "You're Mohammad." Their answers gave

the Prophet SAW a pause. And then, he told them, "Oh, my people, I am warning you

against the misfortune that's coming a cruel misfortune, worship the Lord

of the Universe." This changed the

atmosphere of the crowd. They were taken aback. Surprised, they

looked at each other. "What's he saying?" "Strange." "Is he really leaving the

religion of our forefathers?" "This will anger the gods." Among them, a man came forward. Angry and full of hatred. He shouted. "Nephew, This Arabic sentence meant, "May you be ruined forever." "May your hands break." "Is this why you have

gathered us here?" This man was none other than, the Prophet SAW's uncle Abu Lahab. But his curses afflicted

none other than himself. The fires of hell were

written in his fate. But Allah SWT did not

reveal this to the Prophet SAW. Scholars believe that had this Surah

been revealed then, the people in Mecca would've found

it harder to trust the Prophet SAW, for speaking against his uncle. Back then, in Mecca, uncles

were as revered as fathers. Especially when the

father had passed away. Time passed, Allah SWT's messenger

went to several places, spreading the message

of the singularity of God. But Abu Lahab, would travel after the Prophet SAW. "He's come up with

new poems, it seems." He would have the children in

the markets tease and taunt Mohammad SAW. Telling them to

throw stones at him. But that wasn't the

extent of his cruelty. His wife, the Prophet SAW's

aunt, Umm Jameel, an exceedingly beautiful woman, would come up with

new ways to harass the Prophet SAW. "You are the leaders of Mecca, so why don't you

boycott the fool?" "You're right, we

should boycott him." They cross all limits when

they ordered their two sons, to divorce their wives, because their wives were the

daughters of the Prophet SAW. Umm Kulthūm RA and Ruqayyah RA. "I will consider it a sin

to look at your faces, if you don't

divorce your wives." "Father, we'll

divorce them today." Days passed, but Abu

Lahab's cruelty continued. "O, people of Mecca, my

nephew has gone crazy!" "Don't listen to him." And when his cruelty

crossed all bounds, then, Allah SWT in the 10th

year of the prophethood, revealed Surah Lahab. "Abu Hadi, recite the

Surah revealed to the Prophet SAW. Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem Perish the hands of the Father

(Abi) of Flame (Lahab)! Perish he! No profit to him from all

his wealth, and all his gains! Burnt soon will he be in

a Fire of Blazing Flame! His wife shall carry the

(crackling) wood - As fuel!- A twisted rope of palm-leaf

fibre round her (own) neck! Come, now let's understand this

chapter in a cinematic and easier way. The first verse says,

"Perish the hands of the Father (Abi) of

Flame (Lahab)! Perish he!" In the first verse, Allah SWT says that

both hands of Abu Lahab are destroyed. And the same will happen to him. Here, you need

to note two things. First of all, this verse

talks in the past tense. Not that his hands

'will be destroyed'. His hands were

already destroyed. The moment he insults the Prophet SAW, his hands were destroyed then. This had already happened

though he knew not, his hands wouldn't

benefit him any longer. But Abu Lahab

didn't correct his ways. When this chapter was revealed,

he went around telling people, "He says that my

hands are broken. When did they break? You can see they're fine." Later, when we look at

the Prophet SAW life after the war of Badr, then it'll be revealed how

Abu Lahab met a painful end, and how this chapter

was proven true then. Here, the second

noteworthy point here is that why did Allah SWT mention

his hands specifically? Why did the verse

say, 'Perish the hands...' and not "perish his head or legs" or

his heart failed him, or anything else? To understand this,

watch this scene. Let's look at this

scene once more. In this scene, notice that the soldier

is carrying a spear in one of his hands, and in his other hand, he

carries a shield to defend himself. If a person loses both

their hands, what'll happen? Neither will he

be able to attack, nor defend himself. He'll end up defeated, he'll be attacked mercilessly. Similarly, during Abu

Lahab's life we see that his wealth, his sons, his

connections, his power, everything was ruined. Nothing could help him. Later, we see that when he died, his death was so horrible, that no one wanted to

touch his corpse or bury him. For days, his corpse

rotted on the roads, people were disgusted of it, and even his sons refused to

touch him or take him home. "O sons of Abu Lahab, do

something about your father's corpse." "It smells so bad,

people are throwing up." Now, the second verse. No profit to him from all

his wealth, and all his gains! Neither did his immense

wealth protect him, nor his sons. This verse is a reply to what

Abu Lahab would often tell people. "If he is speaking the truth, then I will simply hand

over my wealth to God, and protect myself from hell." Here, this word 'kasab' is basically means earnings. Many people

inherit family wealth, but kasab refers to what

you earn on your own. There's a hadith of

the Prophet SAW where he says, one's children are the

most precious earnings. And for Abu Lahab, his

children could not help him. Now, the third verse, Burnt soon will he be in

a Fire of Blazing Flame! That Abu Lahab will be

thrown into the flames of hell. Those will be roaring

and blazing flames. And then there

was the fourth verse, His wife shall carry the

(crackling) wood - As fuel!- this verse talks about his wife, and how she'll carry

the fuel for the flames. She would be carrying

firewood in hell, while she too would

be burning in hell, she would also have

to carry the firewood and keep fuelling the fire. When we add firewood to

the fire, the fire gets stronger. She will fuel the

fire that burns her. But interestingly, Allah SWT could have said that she would burn in hell, she won't escape hell ever. But why mention that

she will carry the firewood? Here, we need to understand

her actions in her life. "Don't worry, keep

doing exactly as I say." In this world, she fuelled the

flame of hatred in her husband, she supported him and

encouraged his cruelty. This is why Allah SWT, punished her with carrying the firewood on her head

and fuelling the fire in which she burns. Here, another

important thing is, whenever you are reciting

this chapter for your prayers, you cannot be meek about it. The word 'hammaa' is quite

powerful with a lot of weightage, so you need to stress it

when reciting this verse. Moving on to the fifth verse, A twisted rope of palm-leaf

fibre round her (own) neck! There will be a noose

around her neck, made from the rough

and prickly palm trees. Here, the word 'jeedihaa' refers to her beautiful neck. A neck adorned with jewellery. It's fascinating why such a noose

around the neck is mentioned. The reason is that Umm Jameel, used to wear a

beautiful necklace, and to the people of Mecca, and her

servants, and to everyone she'd say, she would give the necklace to those people

who would help her humiliate Mohammad. This is why it's mentioned here, that there will be a palm-fibre

rope around her beautiful neck, that will stab and

pull at her neck, on the same neck that

wore the precious necklace. This was the interpretation of

Surah Lahab or Surah Masad. Now comes the

most important part, how is it relevant

to our lives today? Based on my understanding of it, first and foremost, the

chapter was sent to us, to show that anyone

who opposes the Prophet SAW is actually opposing Allah SWT. The speed at which he rushed

towards Allah SWT's prophet to hurt him, Allah SWT's punishment was approaching

him at a much greater speed. It was already on him,

but he didn't realise it. Now, as to the other

elements that I've understood. The lessons we can

apply to our lives today. Husbands and wives

are each other's support. Brothers and friends

are each other's support. At times, a friend may

gossip about someone. "You know, such

and such happened." "What, no, tell me more!" This happens

between spouses too. Being interested in other

people's lives more than their own. "Did you hear, such and

such's daughter ran away?" It is the duty of one spouse to guide

the other when they start straying, "Don't gossip." But what do we do? We escalate it and

add more gossip to it. We get into discussing

it extensively. We fuel it. Remember, when you

support a wrongful act, the one who did wrong, the one who initiated it, the one who provoked it, they'll all meet the same end. I hope that this was an
