what's happening youtube everybody's doing very very well today so today we're going to be talking about computer science versus cyber security degree now this was actually a comment posted by one of somebody else um and i try to respond as best i can i can't get them all but this was a really good question so obviously i've been a hiring manager in the tech field as well as a recruiter for agencies we've hired a lot of different cyber security engineers software engineers in a variety of different companies so we definitely know what people are looking for right now this is me made in 2021 um so as if this is your first time the channel by the way we do definitely do different topics on just entrepreneurship on hiring different people on ways that you can do career success and just a whole lot of things that i have found that have worked for me in my life um just always leveling up and if you know i'm a big coffee drinker today is actually bone broth day so it's just a heads up we're going a little bit healthier today it is really scalding halt so i'm not even going to touch it um but to get to the point so i'll try to make this quick because i actually have a meeting in five minutes but computer science versus cyber security degree if this is really good if you're thinking of undergrad if you're looking at graduate school if you're looking to better yourself through education right now this is like we're see a timeline it is august and there's the delta variant which is on the way and everything like that so you're you're seeing huge trends going on right now now number one i will let you know that i'm seeing a lot of stuff going on about boot camps boot camps versus traditional education bachelors versus masters what works for you which one's best well i would incorporate a few different things i believe that with computer science you know you're going to be getting right off the bat you're going to be easily making 70 80 90k um right if you have a bachelor's of computer science um you're gonna be making pretty good money and that money will continue so it depends on what you would do if you love problem solving if you're like a rubik's cube chestiness you love strategy definitely go start going into the software route okay they're really good for puzzles people who really can have that mindset um if you like coding if you like those things uh i would definitely recommend going for a bachelor's of computer science so i know that a lot of companies um be wary of boot camps first off just overall be wary of boot camps okay boot camps can work in specific situations boot camps can work with software developers or software engineers if you already have the job i would really recommend that you're with a company you prove yourself to that company if they're hiring for software engineering you put up the money because it's not expensive do a part-time and stay with that company and you'll gain that experience if you do a boot camp and you go right into a job you're not going to get hired as a software engineer it's very very unlikely very unlikely i'm not saying it happens all the time but there are clients that we have that just flat out won't okay and there's a lot of boot camps and just remember follow the money a lot of boot camps are pitching they're pitching like oh yeah you get this we we have uh job placement we have all these things it's not that true frankly and i've been on the panels of some of these boot camps they asked me as a consultant what do you think and it's just there there's just a lot of misinformation there so having a bachelor's of computer science is way more effective than going to boot camp having a master's computer science is more effective than that now you will have a good paycheck you'll be making way more than the national average with a computer science degree now with computing like let's say cyber security degree cyber security is much more effective in terms of where it's going so if you were to do today you'd make more money as a software engineer if you're looking at what's going to happen in the next two to five years cyber security is probably going to be making you more money now i would really strongly recommend that you go with where more your talent lies as well as where your interest lies follow that path whether you're really good as well as what really excites you can't go wrong that way because both areas are going to make good money um if you're very torn in between the two i would really recommend going to cyber security route because that is going to be more essential as time goes on it's becoming more and more popular as you know it's much more the trend it's going to keep increasing a lot of people are still going to computer science degree which is fine but cyber security is going to be more in demand and you will be more marketable that way don't do cyber security boot camps there's there's too much information for you to cram in three months so any boot camps that are pitching like oh you'll be a cyber security and hey i've seen them online because i'm in that industry so i get targeted ads become a cyber security engineer in three months or six months uh i would not recommend that way if i was in somebody's shoes and i had an interest in both i would strongly recommend that i would go for a bachelor's in cyber security okay i would be learning coding on the side if you're very strong with that if you have a good um if you're a specialized generalist in those areas where you really have those two pathways where you know enough about cyber security hardware and software wise you know about risk management framework and you also know a bit of coding and coding you can learn on your own it's it's like free programs online nowadays so i would really go with both if you're if you're really considering it do a bachelor's computer in uh sorry cyber security and learn coding on the side you can do a boot camp if you want but if you just rely on boot camps it's gonna be very tough for you i would only do a boot camp if you have a strong relationship and a current employment okay um there's other clients that if you have only a boot camp you'll still need four years of experience okay and that's the only reason they would hire you is really the experience so just again be aware of boot camps i would recommend going for your bachelor's should you go for your masters um in computer science i i have friends who do it who don't really recommend it it doesn't give them a huge bump up in terms of salary but in cyber security it definitely does so computer science versus cyber go with your gut go with kind of what makes sense always when you're researching different educational programs i gotta go from my meeting if you're researching other educational programs make sure that you find out success stories have they been proven to people leaving their program going to other positions and contact those people verify okay trust but verify right uh so again if i was in somebody's shoes and i was a total like you know want to go into this industry as um into computers and into the industry i go for a bachelor's of computer science still learn coding on the side you will become an amazing candidate for people and you know employers are going to be like just at your friend door knocking all the time if you guys want um feel free to reach out i'll include my email in the description below if you're looking for a free resume review we are offering that currently as well as um some private consulting uh if you need some interview prep or if you're wanting to get some of the tools that i use on a daily basis that really have actually doubled and tripled my income it's pretty awesome uh i will not hide you down you got to message me okay if you don't ask don't get uh but message me if you were interested in learning that information i will respond to as many people as i can and have a great weekend i'm going off to the wineries this weekend so it's gonna be great cheers
