Amen. You may be seated. And at this time I invite our youngest disciples to come forward. Good morning. >> Good morning. We got to try that again. Are we awake this morning? >> Yes. >> Yes. All right. Well, good morning. >> Good morning. >> Good morning. >> Good morning. It's great to see y'all today. It's a beautiful day, isn't it? >> Yes. >> Yeah. You happy to be at church? >> Yes. >> Yes. You know why you should be happy to be at church today? >> You do. You know why? Why? Why is that? That's because today is good sheeperd Sunday. >> Yeah. Good sheeperd Sunday. It's a good day. We like good sheeperd Sunday. You know why? Because it means Jesus is our good shepherd. So I want to ask you a quick question. Okay. Have you ever been in a crowded place? Maybe you're at like a playground or you're in like >> I've been in a crowded place. >> You've been you Okay. You've been You've been in a crowded place before? >> Yeah. >> A restaurant. >> A restaurant? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. A really crowded restaurant. >> Disney. >> Crowded place. >> Carowind. >> Carowind. I've been at Disney World and it was a big giant crowd. >> Oh, really? Oh, wow. >> I was like, have no space. I had zero space in a crowd. >> Yeah. It can be a little uncomfortable, can it? >> In a big space. Yes, that's exactly right. Well, so I'm curious. So, you've been in a crowded place before and then maybe has someone tried to get your attention like maybe your mom or your dad or someone that they've tried to yell across the crowded space and you can recognize it, right? You can kind of tell when it's your mom or your dad that's calling for you, can't you? Even if it's really crowded. >> Yes. So, what we learned today is that Jesus is our good shepherd. So like sheep, when the shepherd calls on the sheep, we know the voice of Jesus. We know the voice of Jesus because we come to church. We come to church and we listen to the word of God and then that allows us to know exactly when Jesus is calling us. It's pretty cool, huh? >> So let us pray. >> Dear God, >> Dear God, >> thank you for being our good shepherd. Thank you for being our good shepherd >> and calling us by name. >> Because you love us >> because you love us. >> Because you love us. >> In Jesus name. >> Amen. All right. Thank you so much. Great to see you this morning. Uh oh. Our first reading is from the second chapter of Acts beginning with the 42nd verse. The baptized devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship to the breaking of bread and the prayers. All came upon everyone because many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common. They would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all as any had need. Day by day as they spent much much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having been having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day, the Lord added to their number whose those who were being saved. Christ is risen. This is the word of life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to God. We will read Psalm 23 responsively. >> The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. >> He restores my soul. He leads me in the path of righteousness for his name's sake. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows. The second reading is from 1 Peter the 2 chapter beginning with the 19th verse. It is a commendable thing if being aware of God a person endures pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do good and suffer for it, this is a commendable thing before God. For to this you have been called because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you could follow in his steps. He committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was abused, he did not return abuse. When he suffered, he did not threaten, but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds, you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. Christ is risen. This is the word of life. >> Hallelujah. Thanks be to >> God. Halleluah Lord and Savior all your sin until our hearts are The Holy Gospel according to John. >> Glory to you, Lord. >> Jesus said, "Very truly I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in by another way, is a thief and abandoned. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who come before me are thieves and bandits." But the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved and will come and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. The Gospel of the Lord. >> Praise to you Christ. >> In the name of God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. There is a lot of noise in our lives. There's a lot of noise, probably more noise than any other generation before us that we experience. So, I have a question. How many of you when you you first wake up, one of the first things you do is check your phone? You check your phone, you know, your you you you see all the notifications that that you had missed while you're sleeping. Somebody wants your attention. Something is just so urgent. So that's why we we we just have to do this right away. And then and then the day begins and then the voices, they just keep on coming. There's the the cable news anchor who is talking about something that is so important, something controversial. There's the social media feed that you're you're going through and you're scrolling and scrolling, sometimes doom scrolling. And then, you know, for some of us, maybe the loudest voice of all, it's the voice in your own head. The voice that tells you you're not good enough, that you got to try harder, that you got to do something over and over. We just hear so many voices on a weekly basis. Actually, when I was in seminary, I took a class that was the premise of it was kind of based on this. It was uh it's an interesting name, so be ready. It's hiphop and the theological formation of young people. hip hop and the theological formation of young people. The idea is, you know, by the time Sunday rolls around, most of us have have just heard all sorts of voices and music, whatever it may be. Uh about 160 hours straight perhaps of of things that that uh that may make us feel like we have to compare ourselves to others or that we may have to uh do something different. Not great voices sometimes. But then with hiphop, the the idea is that this is something that uh young people are listening to quite a bit and they're formed by it. They're molded by it, right? And at best, if you go to church, you're really only experiencing the word of God at maybe, you know, 2 hours maybe at best a week. But think about all the other voices that you encounter throughout the week. There's a lot there's a lot of other voices. We are formed by the voices that we listen to. We're formed by the voices that we listen to. In our text today, Jesus says that the sheep hear his voice and they know his voice. That's it's kind of how faith works. Jesus says, "Not by figuring everything out perfectly or getting all your beliefs perfectly lined up. Faith comes by hearing a voice that you're able to recognize. The thing is though, if we're honest, it's it's not always so simple, so easy. Because the danger is that there's so much noise that we hear, like I said, you know, over and over. Sometimes not such good noise that we hear and that we uh absorb. And sometimes we can start to to take those other voices and we can start to believe them. the ones that say that that you're falling behind, that you're not doing things right, that you're you're not enough, that all sorts of other things are falling apart. These voices, they're negative. They can be debilitating in a lot of ways. And after a while, when you pay so much more attention to these other voices, it may be a lot more challenging for you to be able to distinguish between those negative voices and the voice of the shepherd. Jesus names those voices today, I think, pretty directly. The thief comes only to kill and destroy. Jesus says there are voices in our lives that just that can steal our peace from us. Voices in our lives I think that can crush hope. Voices that can slowly over time as we are molded by them. And they can narrow our vision of the world that it just has to be uh a certain way and it can make us feel very anxious and it can make us feel very small small. Into all of that we hear Jesus this morning saying that I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. And this is where I think we can get a little tripped up when we hear that word abund or that phrase rather abundant life. abundant life. We might think more control, more certainty, hey, maybe even a little bit more money. That's abundance, right? We think it means that everything will then fit neatly and be good and everything will make sense. That's that's the abundant life. But Jesus Jesus rarely gives us a life that I think makes sense from a human point of view. Jesus gives us a voice that we can trust, however, when when nothing else really does make sense. Jesus gives us his very self. Thank God for Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. I shall not want. Not because life is easy or perfect or everything lines up. Not because everything is is going your way, but because wherever you may be, wherever you go, green pastures as we hear, or that darkest valley, you are not alone. The shepherd is there. That's really what it means to have an abundant life. Life lived in the presence of God. life held in a relationship where you are fully known, fully claimed, fully and completely by your name. You don't stumble into that kind of life willy-nilly. It doesn't happen by accident. You have to hear the voice, the right voice. You have to be formed and you have to be molded. And frankly, I think that's why we come here, why we come to St. John's, to be formed and to be molded. It's not just out of habit. It's not just because our grandparents did or our great-grandparents. It's not just because we want to check a box and say, "Yep, went to church this week." I think we come because somewhere very deep down we know that we are losing track of the voice that really matters, the voice that truly matters to us. And we need help. We're human beings. We need help hearing it again. And something happens here in a place like this that you can't get anywhere else outside. You can't get it from your phone, no matter what new version comes out. You can't get it by just constantly watching cable news. You can't get it when you wake up in the middle of the night and you're just racing through your own thoughts. Week after week, something happens here in this place at St. John's when you you walk in and you're carrying all of those other voices that you've been listening to to the ones that that may accuse you, the ones that may agitate you, the ones that tell you you're not enough, you're not good enough, things are bad. And then week after week, God meets you. God meets you right here in plain and simple ways. Week after week, God does this strange and stubborn thing. God speaks to us. God speaks to us not as some trending voice, but in the same voice that he's called people for centuries. The same voice that God's called people for centuries. You and me, yes, but but all the saints, the communion of saints. Those who, you know, the saints of St. John's who are out back. It's it's a familiar pattern. It's in your bulletin. It makes a lot of sense. The scriptures are read and then somehow through human words that good shepherd, the good shepherd speaks to us a new again. And we stand and we say words that Christians have said for centuries, generation after generation. We say a creed that we certainly didn't invent. We say prayers often that we didn't write. And the point is it's because faith is not something that we manufacture. But faith is something that thanks be to God we receive. Every week bread is placed in your hand and someone says the body of Christ given for you. And whether or not you feel it, whether or not you're you're feeling that spiritual high, this is key. Whether or not you've had a a great week or a terrible one, you're still fed here week after week by the good shepherd. Water. It once touched your head. And whether or not you remember it, the shepherd claimed you. The shepherd claimed you as the shepherd's own. And week after week, you hear the same thing in a hundred different ways. That you were mine. That I know your voice. and that nothing can take you out of my hand. The thing is when you're molded by a voice like this, it doesn't happen overnight, but it happens by coming here week after week. Slowly, you start to recognize the right voice, the voice of the shepherd. And then we hear what happens next from Jesus. Jesus doesn't say that the the sheep stay locked in the fold, safe, quiet, everything peaceful. Jesus says that they can come in and they can go out and they can find pasture. We come in, we're gathered, we're we hear the word of God, we're fed, we get to to hear that shepherd's voice once again, once a new. And it's it's in the bulletin. It's gathering. It's word. It's meal. It's sending. It's the form of our very worship that's forming us for life. And then we can go out. We can go out Monday back to the to the work week into whatever muck we're dealing with. Maybe back into the hospital, back into a diff difficult life circumstance or conversation that we have to deal with. Just back into the week. But we don't start the week the same as if we had never heard that voice. We are able to start the week a little bit differently because we've heard the one true voice. You're not baptized and claimed by that shepherd because some trending algorithm could define you. You were not claimed in that font so that the cable news host could have the final word on who you are. You belong to the good shepherd. It is the voice that says the absolute truth about who you are. That is the voice from the good shepherd. And when the noise starts, and it will as soon as you leave this place, as soon as you wake up in the morning and you start scrolling, before anything else gets a word in, remember this that the truth has already been spoken over you. Each and every one of you, the truth has been spoken over you and tells you exactly who you are. That you belong to the good shepherd. that the good shepherd knows your voice, that the good shepherd calls you personally by name. And week after week, whether you feel it or not, whether you get it right or not, the good shepherd will keep on speaking. The good shepherd will keep on feeding right in this very place. And the good shepherd will keep on holding on to you because the good shepherd, as we hear today, the good shepherd does not lose his sheep. And thanks be to God for that. >> And amen. Father, for the Father has chosen to give you the kingdom that All the children for the father will keep you in his forever. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. I love the lifted res. Praise the Lord. Let all God for his beside you. >> With the whole church we confess our faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty. maker of heaven and earth of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontious Pilot. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy, Catholic, and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Guided by the voice of the good shepherd who calls us each by name and leads us into abundant life. Let us pray for the church, the world, and all in need. Good shepherd, you gather your flock from every place and lead your church with mercy and truth. Give us ears to recognize your voice above all others. Shape us to be communities of trust where your word is heard clearly and your grace is known deeply. Hear us, oh God. >> Good shepherd, you stand at the gate and invite us into safety and freedom. We pray for the world you love, for places of conflict, for those who live in fear, and for those who long for peace. We pray for those who feel lost or forgotten, particularly for prisoners, and we give thanks for the ministries of Chyros. >> Speak your word of life into their hearts and guide them beside still waters. We pray for the earth, for dry ground longing for rain, for plants in need of nourishment, and for farmers and ranchers affected by drought. Hear us, oh God. Your mercy is great. >> Good shepherd, you call forth leaders to tend your flock. To get today we give thanks for your servant Katherine. In her years of faithful ministry among us through music, teaching and care. You have made your voice known in this community. As she steps into what's next, go before her as the gate that leads to abundant life. Surround her with your peace and continue to use her gifts for your glory. Hear us, oh God. >> Good shepherd, you walk with us through every valley and every joy. We entrust to you all for whom we pray, spoken and unspoken, confident that nothing can separate us from your care. Lead us always in your ways until we dwell in your house forever. Hear us, oh God. >> Into your hands, oh God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy through Jesus Christ, our good shepherd and gate, who gives us life and life abundant. Amen. The Lord be with you. >> And also with you. >> Lift up your hearts. >> We lift them to the Lord. >> Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. >> It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty, and our joy that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, for the glorious resurrection of our savior Jesus Christ, the true pascal lamb who gave himself to take away our sin, who in dying has destroyed death and in rising has brought us to eternal life. And so with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubam and saraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn. Holy, holy, holy Lord. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Holy living and loving God, we praise you for creating the heavens and the earth. We bless you for bringing Noah and his family through the waters of the flood. For freeing your people Israel from the bonds of slavery, and for sending your son to be our redeemer. We give you thanks for Jesus who living among us healed the sick, fed the hungry and with a love stronger than death gave his life for others. In the night in which he was handed over, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Christ. And again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people, for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering therefore his lifegiving death and glorious resurrection, we await your promised life for all this dying world. Breathe your spirit on us in this bread and cup. Carry us in your arms from death to life that we may live as your chosen ones, clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church both now and forever. And now, as our savior Christ taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Come to the table of new life. Receive the risen Lord. You may be seated. And all are welcome for communion. Christ. Send us now to speak peace into anxious hearts, to love our enemies, and to bring your healing to the nations. In the name of Jesus, amen. I invite you to be seated at this time, and I invite Catherine to come forward, please. Katherine, as you leave our congregation, we wish to bid you farewell. A reading from Exodus. The Lord said,"I am going to send an angel in front of you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared." Katherine, when you came to St. John's, we rejoice to welcome you into the mission we share as the people of God. Over these many years, you have led us in song week after week, giving voice to our joy, our grief, and our hope. You have walked alongside our youngest disciples at vacation Bible school, on mission trips, and at youth gatherings, helping them discover that the story of God includes and celebrates them and their unique gifts. You have written, told stories, and given language to what we become, what we sometimes struggle to say ourselves. You have helped us mark the seasons of the church year. Advent longing, Christmas joy, Lenton reflection, and Easter hope. So that over time, these rhythms and your contributions have become part of us. Though this is not written, I invite the congregation to please stand at this time and read together this paragraph. Through all of this, God has been at work blessing you in this place and blessing us through you. And so today we give thanks for the countless often unseen ways you have helped this congregation pray, sing, and believe. Let us pray. Gracious God, we thank you for the work and witness of your servant Catherine. You have given her gifts for music, leadership, creativity, and care. And you have used those gifts to build up your church in this place. Now, as she enters a new chapter, bless and preserve her in this time of transition. Go before her to prepare the way. Walk beside her in moments of uncertainty. Surround her with friends, companions, and communities that will sustain her. Give her a clear sense of your calling and the courage to follow where you lead. by your Holy Spirit be present in her pilgrimage that she may continue to travel with the one who is the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus Christ our Lord.
