We begin this story now. The rain had been falling on Diagon Alley for 3 days without pause, and Hermione Granger had come to associate the sound of it against her office window with the particular cadence of brides in crisis. There was something about weather that made people honest. Something about a low gray sky pressing down on the chimney pots that loosened the tongues of women who had spent their lives learning to hold them still. She did not, however, expect Astoria Greengrass. The bell above the door of Granger & Company, bespoke magical ceremonies, gave its small silver chime at 20 minutes past 4:00, and Hermione looked up from a swatch book of dove gray silks to find a woman standing on her threshold who looked as though she had walked through the rain without remembering to lift her hood. Her pale hair was plastered to her temples. Her traveling cloak hung heavy and dark at the hem. Her hands, small, ringed, trembling, were clasped together at the level of her sternum, as though she were holding her own ribs in place. "Miss Granger," she said, and her voice had the careful articulation of a person who had rehearsed her opening sentence in a carriage. Forgive me. I do not have an appointment. Hermione rose. She had met Astoria Greengrass twice before, both times in passing. Once at a ministry function, once at a charity gala. And both times she had been struck by the particular quality of the youngest Greengrass daughter's stillness. It was the stillness of a person who had learned very early that to move freely was to be punished. Tonight, that stillness had broken. Tonight, she stood in Hermione's doorway with rain dripping from her chin onto the parquet floor. And she was looking at Hermione as though Hermione were the last lit window in a darkened street. And the Featherington. And Pansy Parkinson's last spring. I did. They say you are the best. They are kind. They are accurate. Astoria turned. The drying charm took the worst of the rain from her cloak, but could do nothing for the wet sheen of her lashes, and she did not pretend it could. She wrapped her hands around the cup as though it were a small living creature she meant to keep warm. His name is Owen, she said, when the silence had stretched long enough that Hermione understood she was being permitted to listen rather than required to speak. Owen Pritchard. He is a healer at St. Mungo's. He is a half-blood. He has freckles across the bridge of his nose, and he laughs as though he has never been told not to. And last autumn, he set my sister's broken wrist and made her laugh through the pain, and I Her voice caught. She put it down carefully, like a cup that might chip. I have loved him for 14 months. He has loved me for 13. He has asked me twice to run. I cannot run. My father would find me. He would find Owen first. Do you understand what I am telling you? Yes. Hermione said. The Malfoys are not Astoria made a small, helpless gesture. Draco is not unkind. He is not. He has been perfectly courteous to me for all the years of our engagement. He does not love me either. So it cannot be me. Astoria lifted her eyes. They were quite dry now with the particular dryness of a person who has wept herself past the place where weeping helps. It must be him. Draco. He must be the one to call it off. He must look at this marriage and find some reason any reason to walk away from it. And it must look like his doubt, his hesitation, his fault. So that the contract penalties fall on the Malfoy side rather than ours. Her mouth did something that was not quite a smile. I have come to ask you to plan a wedding that does not happen, Miss Granger. I have come to ask you to plan it so beautifully that he cannot help but examine it. And I have come to ask you to engineer within the planning the small frictions and the small revelations that will lead him on his own to the door. Hermione did not answer at once. She looked at the woman across her desk, pale, ringed, 23 years old, betrothed since the age of 11 to a man who did not love her, in love with a healer who could be destroyed by a letter from her father. And she thought about a great many things at once. She thought about her own work, which she had built from nothing in the four years since the war, brick by careful brick. She thought about the Malfoy name, which she had reason to hate, and reason lately to understand was more complicated than her hatred had room for. She thought about Draco Malfoy at the Wizengamot hearings, white-faced and silent while his father was sentenced. She thought about him at the Ministry Gala last December, standing alone by a window with a glass of something untouched in his hand, looking at nothing. She thought mostly about the small wet patch on Astoria Greengrass's cloak where a tear had fallen and the drying charm had not reached. "It is a remarkable thing you are asking," she said at last. "I know. It would have to be done with great delicacy. I know. He is not a stupid man, Miss Greengrass. If he comes to suspect the architecture of it, he will not suspect you, Astoria said with sudden quiet certainty. He despises you. Forgive me. He has despised you in a general way since the age of 12. He will not imagine for a moment that you are working in concert with me because he will not imagine that I am clever enough to ask. That is the only useful thing about being underestimated all one's life. One knows precisely where the blind spots are. Hermione looked at her for a long moment. Three weeks, she said. 21 days. And you have a sum in mind, presumably. For my fee. Whatever you ask. My grandmother's pearls, if you wish. I would rather lose them to you than wear them down an aisle. Hermione shook her head slowly. I will not take your pearls. I will take my standard fee, and you will pay it from your own accounts so that there is no paper trail to your parents. And I will need She drew a sheet of parchment toward her, and the quill at her elbow lifted itself obligingly. I will need to begin with a site visit to the manor tomorrow, if it can be arranged. I will need access to the rooms, the gardens, the staff. I will need a meeting with Mr. Malfoy himself on the pretext of finalizing the ceremony details. Can that be done? It can be done. He has been instructed by his mother to make himself fully available to whichever planner I selected. And he has not been told it is me. No. Astoria's mouth moved again in that thing that was not a smile. I rather thought I would let that be a surprise. It was still raining when Hermione stepped through the gates of Malfoy Manor at 11:00 the following morning. The wrought iron parted for her with a small reluctant shudder as though the house itself were not certain it wished to let her in. The drive was long and dark and lined with yew. And the gravel beneath her boots made a particular sound. The hollow grinding of stones that had not been disturbed by many feet. And by the time she reached the great front door, her hem was wet to the knee and her hair had given up the pretense of order. She was met by a house elf who took her cloak with a courtesy that bordered on apology and shown through a hall in which her own footsteps echoed too loudly and brought at last to a small east-facing morning room where a fire had been lit against the damp. Draco Malfoy was standing at the window with his back to the door. He did not turn at once. He had a quill in his hand and a sheaf of papers on the small writing table beside him. And he was looking out at the rain on the lawn with the particular stillness of a man who had been told to expect a wedding planner and was steeling himself to be civil to a stranger. Hermione had a moment before he turned to look at him at the careful cut of his coat across the shoulders, at the silver glint of a signet ring on his right hand, at the pale fall of his hair against his collar, and to feel something move in her chest that was not, precisely, what she had expected to feel. Then he turned. He saw her. For perhaps 3 seconds, nothing in his face moved at all. He looked at her as though he were waiting for the image to resolve into someone else. The quill in his hand still. His mouth, which had been set in the polite preparatory shape of a greeting, did not progress. Granger, he said finally. Mr. Malfoy. You are He glanced down at the papers on the table as though they might have changed in the last minute. You are the planner. I am. Astoria did not He stopped. He set the quill down with a precision that suggested he did not entirely trust his hand. Astoria did not mention the name. I imagine she did not. He looked at her again. She watched him do it. Watched the gray of his eyes move from her hair to her boots to the ink stain on the cuff of her left sleeve where she had pressed her wrist against a wet quill that morning in her haste to leave. And she watched the small flicker of something cross his face when he reached the cuff. It was not contempt. She had expected contempt. It was something harder to name, and it was gone before she could name it. And he was already gesturing toward the writing table with the courteous formality of a man who had been raised to be courteous before he had been raised to do anything else at all. "Then, we had better begin," he said. "Hadn't we?" Hermione crossed the room toward him, and the rain went on falling against the long windows of Malfoy Manor, and somewhere upstairs, in a house that did not yet know it was being dismantled, a clock began very softly to chime. The writing table had been laid out with the kind of preemptive thoroughness that suggested someone, Narcissa, most likely, had given instructions and expected them followed. A silver inkwell, two quills, one for each of them, a pot of sealing wax, unlit, a leather folio containing what Hermione would discover when she opened it to be the marriage contract itself, copied out in a clerk's hand on parchment so new it still smelled faintly of the lambskin it had been. Draco gestured her to the chair opposite his own with a movement that was all wrist and no shoulder. He did not sit until she had. He did not look at her face once she had. "My mother has prepared a list," he said, "of what she considers the principal questions. I have been instructed to defer to your judgment on matters of taste and to my father's solicitor on matters of expense. I have been further instructed to be agreeable." His mouth did something brief and dry at the corner. "I shall do my best on the last point. It is not historically my strongest. I am aware. Hermione said. He glanced up at that. A flicker of gray beneath pale lashes. And the flicker was almost amusement. And then it was nothing again. He drew a second sheet of parchment toward him. And dipped his quill. Then we may proceed without ceremony. The date is the 28th of this month. The ceremony is to be held in the South Gallery. Which my mother has decided should be cleared of furniture and repapered in something the color of I am told blanched almond. The breakfast is to follow in the Great Hall. The guest list stands at 140. The efficient is to be He consulted the list. The right Reverend Marcus Borage. Who I gather is some species of cousin on the Greengrass side and is therefore unavoidable. Have you any preferences? Hermione said. Of your own. >> [clears throat] >> He looked at her again. This time he did not look away. Preferences? He repeated. On any of it? The papers, the flowers, the efficient, the vows? Granger. He set the quill down. I have known I would marry Astoria Greengrass since I was 7 years old. I have had by my count 16 years to develop preferences. I have not developed any. The papers may be the color of blanched almond. They may be the color of porridge. They may be the color of the inside of a sheep for all I He stopped. He drew a breath that did not let her see him draw. Forgive me. That was not agreeable. Let me try again. No, Miss Granger. I have no preferences. Please choose for me as you would choose for any client who had none. It was the please that did it. Not the rest. The rest was the brittle politeness of a man who had been raised on it as on bread. The please was something else. Something offered with a small, almost imperceptible give in his shoulders, as though he had set down a weight he had not realized he was carrying until the moment he was permitted to. Hermione made a small mark in her own notes. She did not let him see what she had written. Then, we shall begin with the gallery. She said. I shall need to walk it. Would you be so kind? He walked her through the manor with the particular economy of a man giving a tour of a house he had not chosen to live in. Down the long east corridor, past the portraits, most of whom looked away from her with a synchronized disdain that was almost a form of choreography, and through the doors into the south gallery where the morning's pale gray light fell in long bars across a parquet floor that had been polished to the dull gleam of an old coin. The gallery was vast. It was also, Hermione understood within three steps of crossing its threshold, the wrong room. She did not say so at once. She crossed instead to the windows, which ran the full length of the southern wall, and she stood in one of the bars of gray light with her hand against the cold glass. And she let the room speak to her as old rooms did, in the way they always did when one stopped trying to bend them. "It is too long." she said at last. "It was designed for processions, for sovereigns. The eye is dragged the entire length of it before it can settle. A bride walking the aisle would be exhausted before she reached you." "I had not considered that the bride would be exhausted." "Brides are always exhausted, Mr. Malfoy. It is one of the great unspoken truths of my profession." She turned. He was standing near the doors, perhaps 15 ft from her, with his hands clasped behind his back in the manner of a man who had been taught the posture by a tutor and had not unlearned it. He was looking at her with an expression she could not entirely read. The gray light from the window fell across one side of his face and left the other in a soft dimness. And she had a passing thought that he looked in this light less like the boy she remembered and more like a portrait of someone she had never been introduced to. "What would you propose?" he said. "The orangery." His brows drew together. "The orangery is small." "It is intimate. It has a southern exposure. It smells of citrus and old stone. The light there at 4:00 in the afternoon, which is when I gather the ceremony is to be held, is the color of warmed honey. 140 guests will not fit. 80 will. The other 60 may be cut without anyone of consequence noticing. And your mother may blame me for the cutting. He looked at her for a long moment. Then, with no warning at all, he laughed. It was a small laugh, barely more than a breath, and it was gone almost before it had occurred. But Hermione heard it, and she heard also the particular quality of it, which was the quality of a sound that had not been used in some time. He seemed surprised by it himself. He pressed his thumb briefly against the center of his lower lip, as though to confirm that he had been the source. And then he dropped the hand again and said, with a recovered evenness, "My mother will hate you." "Your mother already hates me, Mr. Malfoy. I have made my peace with it." "She will hate you more." "Then, I shall be efficient about earning it." Something passed across his face that was not, this time, the brief flicker of amusement. It was something slower. He looked at her, properly looked at her, in a way he had not done at the writing table. And his eyes moved from her face to her hands, which were holding her notebook against the front of her robe, and then back to her face. And he did not seem to know what to do with what he saw. "You are not what I expected," he said. "What did you expect?" "I expected" He stopped. He glanced toward the windows as though the rain on the panes might supply a more diplomatic answer than the one he'd been about to give. I expected someone with rather more ribbons about her person. I left the ribbons at the office. I find they are a distraction in survey work. Evidently. He did not say anything else for a moment. Neither did she. There was a particular quality of silence that settled into the long gallery then. Not awkward, not strained, but something else. Something that had the texture of two people both deciding simultaneously and without [clears throat] consultation to allow a silence to continue rather than break it. It was Hermione who broke it in the end because it was her work to break such things and shape them into use. "I shall need," she said, "to see the orangery." The orangery was reached by a long covered walk along the south face of the house. And the walk was open to the gardens on one side. And the rain, which had thinned to a fine gray suspension, drifted through the colonnade in small reluctant gusts that caught at her hair and the hem of her robe. Draco walked half a pace behind her. He had not offered his arm. He had not offered to share a charm against the wet. He was carrying, she noticed, and she was not certain when he had picked it up, a black umbrella, which he was not opening and which he was carrying at a slight forward angle as though he had been about to open it and had then thought better of presuming. She stopped at the door of the orangery and turned. He nearly walked into her. Mr. Malfoy. Miss Granger. You may open the umbrella. I Yes. Of course. He opened it. It was an old umbrella, oiled silk over whalebone. And it made the small particular sound of a thing that had been well kept and rarely used. He held it above her and the gray light filtering through the silk turned the air between them a soft uneven color like the inside of a shell. He was perhaps 18 inches from her. She could smell faintly the cedar of his coat and beneath the cedar something else. Something warmer. Something that might have been the soap he used or might have been simply the warmth of his skin in the cold of the morning. She found with a small interior shock that she did not let reach her face that she had cataloged the smell. She turned away from him and pushed open the door of the orangery. The smell inside was extraordinary. Old stone warmed by glass. The dark wet earth of the planters. The particular green gold scent of orange leaves. And beneath it the faint sweet rot of a fallen fruit somewhere out of sight that no one had thought to remove. The light even through gray rain was the color she had promised him. The color of warmed honey. And it fell across the brick floor in long lozenges. And it caught the dust in the air and turned it into something almost alive. She heard him close the umbrella behind her. She heard him step inside. She heard him stop three paces in and she heard him do something she had not heard him do before, which was to draw a breath in through his nose with a small audible appreciation as though the smell had taken him by surprise. She did not turn round. "You have not been here in some time," she said. "Not since I was a child." "Why?" He was silent for a moment. "Then it was my grandmother's room. She used to take her breakfast here. After she died, my mother had it closed. I think his voice took on the careful flatness it had used at the writing table. The flatness of a man stepping over something that might give way beneath him. I think my mother could not bear the smell of it without my grandmother in it. I had not, until just now, I had not remembered that I missed it." Hermione turned, then slowly because she understood she was about to do something with her face that she would prefer not to do. And she wished to have it under control before he saw it. He was standing in the doorway with the umbrella held loose at his side and the warmed honey light falling across his shoulders. And he was looking at her and his face was not arranged. For a moment, perhaps two, it was simply a face with all the small unguarded movements of a person remembering something they had not given themselves permission to remember in a long time. Then he saw her seeing it. The arrangement returned. The shoulders settled. The mouth resumed its careful shape. The gray eyes found a point somewhere to the left of her ear and the moment was packed away with the brisk precision of a man who had spent his life packing such moments away. And he said in a voice that was almost his earlier voice, but not entirely, "It will do, then. The orangery. Will it?" "It will do beautifully, Mr. Malfoy." "Then we are agreed." "We are." He nodded once. He turned to go. At the door, he paused only for an instant, only long enough for his hand to rest on the iron handle and then withdraw. And he glanced back at her over his shoulder with something in his expression that she would think about later in the small hours of the morning when she ought to have been sleeping and was not. "Miss Granger." "Yes." "Thank you," he said, "for not asking about my grandmother." And then he was gone down the colonnade with the umbrella still closed in his hand and the rain still falling steadily on his pale, uncovered head. The third visit to Malfoy Manor was scheduled for a Tuesday evening and Hermione arrived with a leather case that contained, among other things, a draft seating chart drawn in three colors of ink, a sheaf of sample menus from a caterer in Bath, and a small folded note from Astoria Greengrass that read in a hand so even it might have been printed He is asking questions about you. Not many. Enough. She burned the note in the kitchen grate of her office before she left. She did not burn it because she was afraid of being discovered. She burned it because she had read it three times in the course of the afternoon. And the third time her pulse had moved in a way that was not appropriate to a professional engagement. And she preferred not to carry such things into a client's house. The manor at dusk was a different creature from the manor at noon. The yew along the drive had gone black against a sky the color of bruised pewter. And the windows of the great house were lit from within with the soft uneven glow of beeswax candles in old sconces. And the gravel under her boots made the same hollow sound it had made before. Except that this time she was beginning to hear it as a kind of announcement. As though the house knew her step now and had decided whether or not to mind it and had not yet told her which. She was shown not to the morning room this time but to the library. It was a long room with a coffered ceiling and three tall windows draped in dark green velvet. And a fire had been lit at one end against the autumn chill. And the smell in the air was the smell of old paper and applewood smoke and the faint cold mineral note of stone that had been warmed and was now cooling again. Draco was already there. He was standing at the long table in the center of the room with his coat off and his shirt sleeves turned up once at the cuff. And he was looking down at something laid out on the table surface with the absorbed attention of a man who had not noticed her arrival. She paused in the doorway. He had laid out on the dark wood of the table the four sample menus she had sent ahead by owl that morning. Beside them he had placed a small notebook in which he had been writing in a tight precise hand. Beside the notebook he had placed and this was what stopped her in the doorway a slim volume bound in oxblood leather that she recognized after a moment as a copy of Mrs. Beeton's Magical Receipts for the Country House which had been her own grandmother's copy and which she had given to Astoria Greengrass two weeks earlier with a suggestion that the bride might find it useful. He was reading it. He had got by the look of the page perhaps a third of the way through. She must have made some small sound because he looked up. For an instant and only an instant there was an expression on his face that she could not name and that he did not have time to hide. It was the expression of a man caught doing something he had not given himself permission to be caught doing. Then it was gone. And he was straightening and he was reaching with one hand for his coat where it lay over the back of a chair. And she said, more sharply than she had meant to, "Don't." He stopped. His hand was on the coat. He looked at her. "Don't put it back on for me," she said, more gently. "We have a great deal to get through tonight. You will be more comfortable as you are." He hesitated. Then he let the coat fall with a small dry sound back onto the chair. He did not turn his cuffs down. He did not, however, quite know what to do with his hands now that they had nowhere to go. And she watched him resolve the problem by laying them flat on either side of the menus in a way that suggested he had decided to anchor himself. "You are early," he said, "by 4 minutes." "That is early, Granger. For most clients I receive, 4 minutes early is an act of war. I shall apologize to your mother on the way out." "Don't bother. She is not here. She is in London terrorizing a milliner. We have the house to ourselves for the evening, except for the elves who do not count themselves." He paused. "I have ordered supper to be brought in at 8:00. I was not certain whether you would have eaten." She had not eaten. She had not had time to eat. She had intended to apparate home at 9:00 and stand over the sink with a piece of bread and cheese and a glass of something fortifying. She opened her mouth to decline politely, and then she looked at his face, at the careful arrangement of it, at the small effort he had made not to let the offer sound like an offer. And she said, "Thank you. That is kind." He nodded. He did not say anything else. He gestured her to the table. They worked. This was the part Hermione had not expected, had not, in fact, allowed herself to plan for, which was that the work itself was good. The man across the table from her had an eye. He had a memory for detail that was almost irritating. He noticed, when she presented him with the seating chart, that she had placed Theodore Nott three chairs from Pansy Parkinson, and he said, without looking up, "Move him to the other side of the room, Granger, or we shall have a duel before the soup." "They are no longer engaged?" "They were never engaged. They were, however, briefly and catastrophically something else. And Theo is the only person at this wedding who is more bitter than I am. Put him by my cousin Adhara. She finds bitterness restful." She moved Theo. She tried not to smile. He noticed that, too. He did not comment on it. He turned a page. They had been working for perhaps an hour when the elf brought in the supper, a small, simple meal of cold pheasant and bread, and a dish of pears stewed in red wine and cinnamon, and set it at the far end of the long table, and lit a second branch of candles, and bowed itself out. Draco set down his quill. He looked at the food. He looked at her. He looked at the menus laid out between them. "We could," he said, "continue while we eat." "We could or we could not. We could not." He almost smiled. He gathered the menus into a neat stack and set them at the corner of the table. And he gestured her to the end where the food was waiting. And he poured her a glass of something dark from a decanter without asking her what she wanted. And she took it because it would have been graceless to refuse. And because she found in the moment of taking it that she did not entirely want to refuse. The wine was the color of garnet and tasted of figs and a faint warm peppery thing at the back of the throat. She did not ask what it was. He did not tell her. They ate for some minutes in silence. It was not, she noticed, an uncomfortable silence. It was the silence of two people who had spent an hour and a half in the close work of arranging another woman's wedding. And who were now permitting themselves a small interval in which nothing had to be decided. The fire moved softly in the grate. The candles moved softly on the table. Somewhere in the house a clock struck the half hour and the sound came to them muffled through the doors and neither of them remarked on it. "Granger," he said eventually. "Yes." "May I ask you a question that is not about the seating chart?" "You may." He set down his glass. He did not look at her. He looked at the center of the table where a single pear sat in a small pool of red wine, gleaming like a polished stone. "Why this work?" he said. "Of all the things you might have done." She thought about it. She thought about lying. She thought about the polished ready answer she gave to journalists. "I wanted to build something rather than dismantle something after the war." And she thought about how that answer, while true, was not the whole of the truth. And she thought about the man across from her who had asked the question in the careful flat voice of a person who had paid for the right to a real answer with an entire evening of not asking. "Because no one was happy," she said. He looked up. "After the war," she said. "No one was happy. Everyone I knew was busy with the necessary work of grief and the necessary work of trials and the necessary work of rebuilding the things that had been destroyed. And I [clears throat] was, for a time, busy with those things, too. And then, one summer, I went to a wedding. It was a small wedding in a garden in Devon between two people who had each lost most of what they loved. And I watched them put rings on one another's fingers under a wisteria that someone had charmed into bloom out of season. >> [clears throat] >> And I watched the people who had come to watch them. And I thought, She paused. She turned her glass slowly on the wood of the table. "I thought that this was a thing that could be done well, that somebody ought to be doing it well. That if I spent the rest of my life arranging the small bright days that people remembered afterward, when the rest of life was the rest of life, then perhaps that would be a use of a life. So, I did that. He was silent for a long moment. That is a better answer than I expected, he said finally. What did you expect? I expected His mouth did the dry thing at the corner again. I expected something about flowers. I like flowers, Mr. Malfoy, but I did not choose this work for the flowers. No, he said slowly, looking at her over the rim of his glass. I see that you did not. The candles guttered briefly in some unfelt draft. She watched the light move across his face and out of it again and back. She watched him decide something behind his eyes, watched the decision form and falter and form again. And she watched him open his mouth to say it. And she watched him close it without saying it. And she watched him look down at the pear and its small pool of wine and let the moment pass. It is late, he said. We have done enough for one night, I think. May I He hesitated. May I walk you to the apparition point? It is not necessary. I know it is not. Yes, she said. Thank you. They walked the long drive in silence. The yew was very black against a sky that had cleared after a fashion into something showing a few cold stars. He did not offer his arm. He walked half a pace behind her as he had done the first day except that this time the half pace felt less like distance and more like the careful attentiveness of a person who was permitting her to set the pace and would match it. At the gates he stopped. She turned. The light from the gatehouse lantern caught one side of his face. The other was in shadow. He looked at her with an expression that had nothing in it of the boy she had known at school and nothing in it of the man he had been at the writing table on the first day. And he opened his mouth and he closed it and he opened it again and he said "Good night, Granger." "Good night, Mr. Malfoy." She turned on the spot. The manner and the you and the lantern light and the pale uncovered figure of him at the gates spun away into a small dark point and she was standing on her own front step in Diagon Alley with the smell of pheasant and applewood smoke still in her hair. And she stood there for a long moment in the cold with her hand on the latch before she could bring herself to go in. The Modista's shop on Madam Lestrange Lane which had after the war been quietly renamed Lavender Lane by a coalition of shopkeepers who had grown tired of the old name's freight stood between a glove makers and a milliners and its windows were curtained in a heavy cream silk that admitted only the suggestion of movement from within. The bell over the door was charmed not to ring. The proprietress, Madame Iseult, conducted her business in the registered hush of a confessional, and her clients paid handsomely for the privilege. Hermione had booked the fitting for 2:00 on a Thursday. Astoria had arrived at half past one. The veil, the underdress, the overgown of ivory silk shot through with a thread so pale it was less a color than a temperature. All of it had been laid out on a long padded table in the back salon, and Madame Iseult herself had retreated to her workroom with the particular tact of a woman who had been paid to know when she was not wanted. It was, Hermione had calculated, the safest possible setting in which to permit Astoria a small honesty. The shop was sealed. The proprietress was bribed. There were no portraits on the walls and no house-elves in the corners. And the long pier glass in the center of the salon reflected only the two of them. Astoria in her underdress, very pale and very thin in the white silk, and Hermione with her sleeves turned back and a row of pins held between her lips like silver punctuation. "You laughed," Hermione said around the pins, "when I told you about the orangery." "I did." "You should laugh more often. It is becoming to you." "It is not becoming to a greengrass." Astoria's mouth twitched. "It is one of the things my mother used to slap my hand for." Hermione removed the pins from between her lips and set them into the small velvet cushion strapped to her wrist. She knelt to adjust the hem. The silk under her fingers was very fine and very cold. And it whispered against itself with a sound like a long indrawn breath. Tell me about him. She said quietly. Astoria looked down at the top of her head. Hermione could feel the look without lifting her eyes. About Owen? About Owen. There was a long pause. Then Astoria, in a voice so soft that Hermione had to still her hands on the hem to catch it, said, "He hums when he writes prescriptions. He does not know that he does it. It is always the same tune. Some old Welsh thing his mother used to sing him. And he hums it when he is concentrating. And the patients in the next bed always know when he is about to come round because they can hear him three doors down. The first time I noticed, I Her breath caught and she steadied it. I was holding my sister's hand. He had just set her wrist. He was writing out the dosage for the pain potion. And he was humming. And Daphne was half asleep from the anesthetic charm. And I was sitting on the edge of the bed with my coat still on. And I thought, "I am going to listen to that man hum for the rest of my life. I am going to listen to him hum. And I'm going to die." Cuz of course I was. Because I was engaged to Draco. Because there was no She stopped. She did not finish. Hermione had stopped working entirely. She was kneeling on the rug with her hands flat against her thighs, looking up at the woman in the pier glass who was looking down at her own hands as though they belonged to a stranger. He has a small flat above an apothecary in Bloomsbury, Astoria said. It has bad light. It smells of the dried herbs from the shop below. There is a cat that he did not want and that lives there anyway. He calls her bother. She does not come when he calls, but she sleeps on his books. He owns four books. He has read each of them eight times. I have been to the flat twice. I sat on his bed because there is no chair and I drank tea out of a cup with a chip in the rim and I have not been happier before or since. Hermione swallowed. We will get you there, she said. We will get you back to that flat. I promise you. Hermione, I promise you, Astoria. Astoria's hand came down very lightly onto the crown of Hermione's head. It rested there for perhaps 2 seconds. Then it was gone. And Astoria had turned her face toward the window so that Hermione would not have to see what was on it. And she said in something close to her ordinary voice, Pin the left side. It is gaping at the bodice. Hermione pinned the left side. It was then that the bell that did not ring made the small inaudible disturbance of someone entering the front of the shop. And Madame Isobel's voice rose from the workroom in a sharp, interrogative French. And a man's voice answered her in a low, courteous English. And Hermione, on her knees with three pins in her mouth, felt the entire afternoon shift 1° on its axis and become a different afternoon entirely. Madame Isobel, said the voice with the precise, unhurried diction of a man who had been raised never to apologize for his appointments. I believe I am expected. My mother sent word. It was Draco. Astoria's whole body went still in the silk. Hermione, very slowly, removed the pins from her mouth and set them down. She rose from the floor. Her knees, she discovered, were not entirely steady. She crossed to the curtained archway that separated the back salon from the front. And she put her hand on the heavy cream silk. And she heard Madame Isobel say with admirable composure, "Monsieur Malfoy, you are an hour early. The bride is I shall wait. Monsieur, with respect, I shall wait, Madame. In the salon, if I may. I do not mind." Hermione did not have time to do the calculation properly. She did the small, fast one. Let him in and have him see Astoria laughing into the silk before the fitting and understand what he was looking at. Or hold him at the threshold and have him understand later that he had been held. And she made the choice on instinct. And the instinct said, "Let him in." Because the work she had been hired to do was the work of making him understand. And the work would not be done by hiding. She drew the curtain aside. He was standing in the front of the shop with his hat in his hand. He had clearly come from somewhere else. There was a faint color in his cheeks from the cold. And his hair was disordered at the temple where the wind had been at it. And when he saw her in the archway, his face did the thing it did, a small unguarded thing. And then it remembered itself. And he inclined his head a quarter of an inch and said, "Granger." "Mr. Malfoy, come through. We are nearly finished. Astoria will not mind." She felt, rather than saw, Astoria behind her draw breath and let it go. He came through. He had to stoop slightly under the lintel of the archway. He was taller than the doorway had been built for, taller than most of the men who came to Madame Issoult's. And Hermione watched him duck his head with the unselfconscious economy of a man who had been ducking through doorways all his life. And then he was in the back salon. And he was looking at Astoria in the pier glass. And Astoria was looking back at him. And the silence that fell between them was the silence Hermione had been afraid of and had been hoping for in equal measure. He did not look at his bride the way a man looks at his bride. He looked at her the way a man looks at a portrait of a cousin he has known since childhood. With affection, with familiarity, with a kind of patient, courteous regret. There was no heat in it. There was no possession. There was nothing of the I am going [clears throat] to listen to that man hum for the rest of my life that had been in Astoria's voice 10 minutes earlier when she had spoken of someone else. And then he looked at Hermione. It was perhaps a half second. It was not longer, but Hermione saw it. And Astoria, watching them both in the glass, saw it, too. And what was in his face when he looked at Hermione was none of the affection or the familiarity or the patient, courteous regret. It was something with weight in it. It was something that did not know it was being looked at. It was something he would, she understood with a cold, small lurch of clarity, deny with his last breath if anyone ever asked him about it directly. He glanced away. He addressed himself to the pier glass. "Astoria," he said, "you look" He paused. He chose his word with the care of a man placing a stone on a wall. "Well." "Thank you, Draco." "My mother sent me to consult about the color of the sash. She has changed her mind, apparently, from the ivory to the the pale gold," Astoria said. "Yes. She wrote to me about it this morning." "Then I am redundant." "You are." "I shall go, then." "You shall stay," Hermione said. She did not know, until she had said it, that she was going to say it. He turned his head toward her with the small slowness of a man who had been struck by something light but unexpected. Astoria in the glass did not turn at all. She was watching Hermione's face in the reflection with the expression of a person who had laid down a card and was waiting to see what would be done with it. "You shall stay." Hermione said again, more evenly, "because I want your opinion on the color. Astoria has been generous about it, but she would tell me a sash made of dishwater was the color of dawn if she thought it would please her hostess. I should like a second view. Madame Issoudun has the swatches. We I bring them." The proprietress vanished. She returned within 30 seconds with three lengths of silk over her arm. A pale ivory, a pale gold, and a third, the color of unripe wheat that nobody had asked for and that she had brought. Hermione understood because she had been a tradeswoman for 40 years and she knew when a room had become a stage. Hermione took the silks. She crossed to Astoria. She laid the ivory against Astoria's waist, then the gold, then the wheat. Each time she turned briefly to look at Draco for his judgement. Each time he gave it. "Not the ivory. It disappears into the gown. The gold, perhaps, but it is harsh. The wheat, no. It makes her look ill." in the flat considered tone of a man who had been raised to have opinions about silk. The third time she turned with the gold sash in her hands, she was closer to him than she had been in the orangery. It was not deliberate. The salon was a small room. She had stepped back from the pier glass without measuring the distance. And he had stepped forward without measuring it either. And they were standing now perhaps a foot apart. And the gold silk in her hands was between them. And she had lifted it slightly to show him the way the light caught the warp. And he had reached without thinking to take a corner of it between his thumb and forefinger to feel the weight. His knuckle, in passing, touched the inside of her wrist. It was perhaps a quarter of a second. Neither of them moved. Neither of them looked at the place where the contact had occurred. He did not withdraw his hand. He did not press it closer. He went on holding the corner of the silk between thumb and forefinger as though nothing had happened. And he said, in a voice that had gone slightly lower in his throat, "The gold. You are certain?" "I am certain." She nodded. She did not at once take the silk away. He did not at once release the corner. The pier glass at the far end of the room held all three of them. Astoria in her ivory underdress, Hermione in her dark working robes, Draco in his coat with the cold still on the shoulders. And Astoria, who had been a quiet woman all her life and who had not become less observant for being quiet, watched the reflection with a face that gave nothing away at all. Then, Hermione stepped back. Draco's fingers opened. The silk fell with a small dry whisper against her skirt. "Thank you, Mr. Malfoy." She said. "Not at all, Miss Granger." He bowed to Astoria then with the same quarter-inch incline of the head to Hermione. And he turned, and he stooped again under the archway, and he was gone. The bell that did not ring made its small inaudible disturbance once more. The front door of the shop closed behind them. In the pier glass, Astoria's eyes met Hermione's. Astoria did not smile. She did not have to. She lifted one pale eyebrow a quarter of an inch, the precise quarter inch of Draco's bow, and Hermione, who had been planning weddings for four years, and had learned to read a face at 20 paces, understood that she had been seen, and that she had been seen with kindness, and that she had not, on any account, been seen with surprise. She turned away from the glass before her own face could give her the rest of it. "The gold," she said briskly to Madame Isolt, who had reappeared in the workroom doorway with the careful blandness of a woman who would never tell anyone what she had seen. "We shall have the gold." The storm came down over Wiltshire on the Sunday before the wedding, and it came down without warning. A sky that had been pewter at noon was iron at 3:00 and black by 4:30, and by the time Hermione stepped through the gates of the manor at 6:00, the rain was falling sideways across the drive, and the yew was bent under it like an old congregation under a long sermon. She had not meant to come on a Sunday. The schedule had been arranged for the Monday morning. Final approval of the orangery layout, final sign-off on the flowers, final consultation with Narcissa about a number of small matters that Narcissa preferred to deliver in person and at length. But the florist in Bath had owled at 4:00 to say that the white lisianthus would not, after all, be available. And the substitution had to be approved before the order could be placed at dawn. And Astoria was in London with her mother and could not be reached. So, Hermione had pulled her cloak on, and she had picked up her case, and she had apparated to the gates of the manor in a wind that nearly took her off her feet. And she was halfway up the drive, soaked to the shoulder, with her hood plastered flat against her hair, when the sky split open in a long white seam directly above the East Tower. And the rain went from heavy to torrential within the space of a single breath. She ran the last 100 yards. The great doors opened before she reached them. The elf, the same small elf who had been taking her cloak for 3 weeks now, and who had stopped apologizing about the third visit, and started, instead, producing a hot towel without being asked, was already on the threshold with a towel held out, and behind the elf in the hall with a glass of something amber in his hand and an expression of polite alarm on his face was Draco. "Granger," he said, "you are drenched. I had not planned Come in. Come in for God's sake. Tibby, the small drawing room and the fire there and brandy and something dry. A robe, a shawl, anything. Now, Tibby." The elf vanished. Hermione stepped over the threshold and stood dripping on the marble floor of the entrance hall. She was aware, distantly, that her hair was hanging in dark, wet ropes against her cheeks and that her hem was heavy with water and that her hands were shaking. Not from cold, precisely, but from the small adrenal aftermath of running through a storm. And she was aware that Draco was looking at her with an expression that was not amusement and not annoyance, but something else. Something that was watching her shiver with the small, fixed attention of a man who had not quite given himself permission to step closer. "The florist," she said, and her voice came out rougher than she meant it to. "The lisianthus. I had to." "Granger." "Yes." "The lisianthus can wait 20 minutes." She nodded. He took her case from her very gently, as though it was something more breakable than a leather case, and he set it down on the long hall table. He did not touch her. He gestured her toward the small drawing room. She walked. Her boots left dark prints on the marble that the elves would have to deal with later. And she felt, irrationally, sorry about it. The small drawing room was the room she had not yet seen. It was on the ground floor on the east side of the house. And it was smaller than the library. And smaller than the morning room. And it had clearly been somebody's private sitting room once. And had not been quite re-purposed. There were two deep chairs drawn up by the hearth. And a low table between them. And a fire was already leaping high in the grate. Because Tibby was very fast. And on the back of the nearest chair. Was draped a long shawl of soft dark wool. That Hermione understood after a moment of looking at it. To have been pulled from somebody's wardrobe in the last 60 seconds. She did not ask whose. She was almost sure it was his mother's. She was not entirely sure. "Take off the cloak." He said from the doorway. "And the boots." "Tibby will dry them." "I shall I shall be in the hall." "Call when you are decent." He closed the door. She peeled the cloak off her shoulders. It was so heavy with water that the act of removing it required two attempts. She unbuckled her boots and set them upright on the hearthstone. Where they began at once to steam. She wrapped the shawl around her shoulders. It smelled faintly of lavender. And of something else, something drier and older that might have been the cedar of an old wardrobe. She did not let herself think about it. She called without quite meaning to make her voice as soft as it came out. Mr. Malfoy. He came back in. He had a second glass in his hand now. The brandy, presumably. The glass he'd been holding when she arrived was nowhere visible. And he crossed the room and set it on the low table beside her chair without comment. He did not sit. He stood at the hearth with his back half to her, holding his own glass loosely between his fingers. And he looked into the fire for a long moment before he said, in the careful voice he used when he had decided not to look at her, "You should not have come tonight." "The flowers Damn the flowers, Granger." She blinked. He had not, in her memory, ever sworn in her presence. It was not a violent oath. It was the small, worn oath of a man speaking past his guard. And it sat in the air between them for a moment before he gathered himself and went on. "The flowers could have waited. You could have sent the owl back and told them to substitute whatever they liked. You could have He stopped. He took a small sip of the brandy. He set the glass down on the mantel and turned to face her. "Why did you come?" "Because the substitution had to be approved tonight." "By you?" "By somebody. Astoria is unreachable. Then the substitution did not have to be approved tonight, Granger. It had to be approved by a person who would be held responsible if the substitution were wrong. And the only person who would be held responsible if the substitution were wrong, given that Astoria is in London and my mother is wherever she is, would be you. He made a small irritated gesture. You came out in a storm at 6:00 on a Sunday evening to take responsibility for someone else's flowers. That is my job. That is not your job. That is He stopped again. He looked at her. The firelight was doing something across his face that she would think about later. That is something else. I do not know what to call it. She did not answer at once. She wrapped her hands around the brandy glass. The brandy was warm. He had warmed it, she realized. He had warmed it with a charm, the small domestic warming charm that took a tap of the wand and the absent attention of a person who had warmed brandy in this house a thousand times before. And she lifted it and drank. And the heat of it ran down the center of her chest and settled there. And she said, finally, without looking at him, it is a kindness to her, to Astoria, to care about the flowers more than she has the strength to care about them right now. That is all. There was a silence. It was a longer silence than the silences they had let stand in the library or in the orangery. It was a silence with a particular weight to it. Hermione could hear the fire moving in the great and the rain against the long window behind her and the small ticking of a clock she could not see. And beneath all of those sounds she could hear or imagine she could hear the careful even rhythm of Draco's breathing across the hearthstone. Granger he said very quietly. Look at me. She looked at him. He was standing perhaps 4 ft from her. He had set his glass down. His hands were at his sides open in a way that suggested he had decided to leave them open and was working at the decision. The firelight caught the silver of the signet ring on his right hand and made it briefly the color of a struck coin. His face was the face she had seen in the orangery the unarranged one and he was not arranging it now. He was looking at her as though he had run out of the energy required to look at her any other way. I do not understand you he said. I No. Let me finish. I do not understand you and I have been trying to understand you for 3 weeks and I have not yet succeeded. And I think tonight I am going to have to ask. So he drew a breath. Why are you doing this? Doing this wedding. Mine. You have not taken a wedding under 3 months notice in 2 years. I asked Pansy. She told me. You took mine on 3 weeks notice and you have been coming out here three and four times a week and you have been He gestured vaguely toward the brandy, the shawl, her wet hair. You have been here, Granger. In a way that exceeds the contract. And I cannot work out why. You do not particularly like Astoria. You do not particularly like me. You have, if anything, reason to like neither of us. And yet you have been arranging my wedding as though it were He stopped. As though it were what? She said very softly. He did not answer. He looked at her for a long second longer. And then he did the thing he had done in the orangery, the small packing away thing. Except that this time it failed. And the arrangement did not quite close over his face. And he turned his head away from her and looked into the fire instead. And his voice, when he spoke, was the voice of a man who had decided not to finish the sentence he had been about to finish. I do not know, he said. I do not know what I was about to say. She set the brandy glass down on the low table. Her hand was not entirely steady. She watched it not be steady with a kind of remote curiosity, as though her hand belonged to a stranger. Mr. Malfoy, she said. Draco. What? Call me Draco. For God's sake. We have eaten supper together. We have argued about Theo Nott's seat. You have been wearing my mother's shawl for 10 minutes. Call me Draco. Draco. He closed his eyes. He did not open them at once. When he did, he was looking at the fire still, not at her. "Hermione," he said, as though he were testing the shape of it. "Hermione." She did not answer. There was nothing at that moment that she could have answered with that would not have been a lie or a truth. And she was not prepared to offer either of them across the four feet of hearthstone between her chair and his place at the mantle. She drew the shawl tighter around her shoulders. The rain went on falling against the window. The fire moved softly. "Stay," he said. She turned her head. "Tonight," he said, "stay. There is a guest room on the east side. The roads are flooded and the apparition wards will be unstable until the storm passes. And I will not have you splinching yourself in a hedge between here and Diagon Alley because you wanted to be brave about a florist. Stay. I shall have Tibby make up the room. You will be gone before breakfast if you wish." "I shall not." His voice did the thing it did. "I shall not be a nuisance to you. I promise. I am only asking that you not go out in the storm." She looked at him for a long time. "Yes," she said at last. "Thank you. I shall stay." He nodded once. He did not look at her. He crossed to the bell pull beside the fire and tugged it. Somewhere in the house, very faintly, a small chime answered. He stood with his hand on the bell pull for a moment after he had tugged it, with his back to her. And she watched the line of his shoulders and the pale gleam of his hair against the dark wool of his coat. And she did not, for once, try to name what she was looking at. The clock she could not see ticked. The fire moved. The rain on the long window behind her went on and on and on. She slept badly. The guest room on the east side of the manor was a beautiful room. A high bed hung with green silk, a small fire kept low in a grate that had been swept at some point in the last hour. A writing desk with paper and ink laid out as though a great many guests had once needed to write before sleeping. And Hermione lay in it with her hair spread on a linen pillow that smelled of dried lavender. And she did not sleep more than two hours together. The storm went on most of the night. The wind in the east tower above her head made a particular thin sound, like a flute held by someone with cold fingers. And every time the sound paused, she expected to hear footsteps in the corridor. And every time she did not hear them, she found she was disappointed by the not hearing in a way she was not prepared to examine. At half past five, she gave up. She rose. She dressed in her own clothes, which had been dried and pressed, and returned to her in a neat folded pile on the chair by the fire. Tibby, working at some hour when respectable elves ought to have been sleeping, and she pinned up her hair without looking too closely at the woman in the mirror. And she went downstairs. She did not expect anyone else to be awake. He was in the morning room. The same morning room as the first day. He was standing at the same window with his back to the door in shirt sleeves this time with no coat at all. And he was not holding a quill. He was holding a cup of black coffee. The light coming in through the long window was the cold thin gray-blue of an autumn dawn after a storm. And it fell across the table where her case still sat. Tibby had brought it up from the hall. And across the carpet where her boots had left no trace. And across the line of his shoulders which were set in the careful unmoving way they had been set the first morning. He had heard her come in. He did not turn round. Good morning, Granger. Good morning. You did not sleep. How? Your boots on the stairs. Half past five is not the step of a woman who slept. She did not answer. She came further into the room. She stood by the fire which had been lit at some point in the last hour. Tibby again, she thought. Or perhaps not Tibby. And she warmed her hands at it for a moment. And the silence between them was not the silence of the library or the orangery. It was a different silence. It was the silence of a thing left undone the night before. Astoria has written. He said. She turned. He was looking at her now. He had a folded sheet of parchment in his hand that she had not seen. He held it out to her. It came an hour ago by the family owl. She has He paused as though he were rereading something he had already read several times. She has indicated that she would like to speak with us both today here at the manor at noon. She says that she has something to tell me that she would prefer to tell in your presence because she is afraid that without a witness, she will lose her nerve. Hermione took the parchment. Her hand was steady. She read the letter which was written in Astoria's even printed hand and which said exactly what Draco had said it said. And beneath the signature in a smaller, looser script was a postscript that Draco had clearly read and chosen not to mention aloud. The postscript said, "I have asked Owen to come also. He will be at the kitchen gate at half past 11. Please let him in yourself, Hermione. I cannot bear for an elf to do it." Hermione folded the letter. She handed it back. "I see," she said. "Do you?" "Yes." He looked at her for a long moment. He did not put the letter down. He held it between two fingers very loosely as though it were a card in a game he had only just realized he had been playing. "Granger," he said. "Hermione, did you know?" She did not answer at once. She thought in the small, fast way one thinks at such moments about the many possible answers to the question. She thought about lying. She thought about half lying. She thought about evading. She thought about Astoria's hand resting for 2 seconds on the crown of her head in the Modista's salon. And she thought about a half-blood healer in a flat above an apothecary with a cat called bother. And she thought about the man across the carpet from her who had stood at his mother's bell pull last night with his back to her and had not turned round. And who was now looking at her with an expression that contained no anger and no surprise and a great deal of something else. "Yes." she said. "I knew." She watched him receive it. She watched it move across his face. Not in a single movement but in a series of small ones. The way weather moves across a field. And she watched him decide with no visible decision not to set the letter down or make any other gesture that would shift the weight in the room. "From the beginning." he said. "From the first day she came to my office. She Hermione drew a breath. "She did not have anyone else, Draco. She was going to be married against her will to a man she did not love. And she was going to lose the man she did love. Because if she broke the contract herself her father would destroy him. And she could not. There was no one else clever enough she said to undo it from inside without leaving fingerprints. She asked me. I said, "Yes. I have been planning your wedding for 3 weeks in such a way that you would, on your own, in your own time, find your own reason to walk away from it. That is what I have been doing. That is what I am for. He was very still. "And the orangery?" He said. "And the seating chart? And the gold sash?" All real. All beautifully meant. I would not lie to her about a wedding, Draco. I would not lie to you about a wedding. The wedding was real. The wedding was always real. What I was, what I was engineering, were the small conditions that would let you see the wedding clearly enough to know that you did not want it. "And have you," he said, very quietly, "engineered them?" I do not know. "Don't you?" No. I She stopped. She made herself meet his eyes. I stopped at some point being certain what I was engineering. I do not know when. I do not know how much of the last 3 weeks was the plan, and how much of it was was not the plan. I am not, at this moment, certain of the line. I am telling you that honestly because I owe it to you to tell you honestly. Because if you ask me to leave this house and never come back, I will leave it now and never come back. And I will not blame you for asking. He did not ask her to leave the house. He stood at the window for a long time with a folded letter between his fingers and the cold dawn light on the side of his face. And he did not say anything. And she did not say anything. And the only sound in the room was the small, steady ticking of a clock on the mantelpiece and the slow contracting hiss of the fire as the new wood caught. Finally, without turning, he said, "You should have told me." "I could not." "You should have told me, Granger." "I could not, Draco." "The whole point of it was that you arrive at the decision on your own." "The whole point?" "I am not talking about the point of it," he said. He turned. He turned and he looked at her. And the look on his face was a look she had not seen before. Not in the orangery, not at the Modistes, not last night by the fire. And it was a look that had been stripped of every careful arrangement he had ever learned. And what was beneath it was very young and very tired and very angry in a way that was almost not anger at all. "I am not talking about the point of the plan, Granger. I am talking about the point of us. I am talking about 3 weeks of watching you across a table and being unable to work out why you had begun to matter to me and being unable to ask you why because I had no right to ask. I am talking about a woman walking into my house in the rain to do a job nobody had asked her to do because she could not bear the thought of the bride being disappointed about flowers. I am talking about the inside of your wrist, Granger. I am talking about the cuff of your sleeve. I am talking about He stopped. He had taken a step toward her without seeming to know he had taken it. He stopped himself. He looked down at his own feet on the carpet as though they had moved without permission. He drew a breath. He stepped back. He set the folded letter down on the writing table with a precision that suggested he did not entirely trust his hand. You should have told me. He said again, more quietly. Because I have been I have spent 3 weeks and the whole time you knew. You knew that this wedding was not going to happen. You knew that I was that I was free to He stopped. He did not finish. He never, in the end, finished. You should have told me, Hermione. That is all. I am sorry. I am not. He passed his hand briefly across his face. I am not asking you to be sorry. I am telling you what I would have preferred. They are different things. The clock ticked. The fire moved. What will you do? She said finally. He looked at her. At noon, she said, when Astoria arrives with with the man she wishes you to meet, what will you do? He did not answer at once. He turned back to the window. He looked out at the lawn, which was a long sheet of silver gray under the early light, and at the yew along the drive, which was bowed and dripping after the storm, and at the gravel where her boots had left no trace. And he said in the careful, flat voice he had used the very first day, I shall be agreeable. I shall meet her young man. I shall ask my mother's solicitor what is required in writing to dissolve the contract from my side without ruining the Greengrass family. I shall pay whatever penalty falls to the Malfoy estate. I shall do it quickly and quietly so that her parents cannot make a public matter of it. I shall His voice caught briefly on the edge of something and recovered. I shall write to Astoria afterwards and wish her well. I do wish her well, Granger. I always have. I was simply never going to be the man who could make her happy. I see that now. I think I have seen it for a long time and have not have not had the courage of seeing it. And then and then he paused. He did not turn round. Then I do not know. She crossed the carpet. She did not plan to. Her body did it before her mind had finished telling it not to. She stopped behind him at a distance of perhaps 2 ft. Not closer. She did not let herself come closer. And she said to the back of his pale uncovered head, "May I write to you?" He went very still. "After," she said, "after the contract, after Astoria, after all of it. Not soon. Not Not when it would be improper, but after. May I write to you?" For a long moment, he did not move. Then, very slowly, he turned his head. He did not turn his whole body. He turned only his head so that she saw him in profile against the cold gray window with the early light catching the line of his jaw and the small unsteady movement at the corner of his mouth. Yes. He said. Yes. Hermione. He said. Yes. Please write to me. He said. I should like that very much. He did not turn the rest of the way round. He did not reach for her. He left his hand where it was flat on the window sill. And she left her own hands where they were knotted in front of her at the level of her waist. And they stood like that for what could not have been more than 10 seconds. And felt like a great deal longer. With the dawn light on him. And the fire at her back. And the morning of the day that would unmake his marriage just beginning to take its color from the sky outside the window. At 25 minutes past 11. Hermione went down to the kitchen gate. She had not been to that part of the grounds before. The kitchen gate was at the far end of the kitchen garden. Behind a low wall of weathered brick that the rain had stained the color of wet bread. And it was reached by a flagged path that ran between rows of late cabbages and the dark fingered stalks of last year's lavender. The storm had left everything sodden. Her boots made small wet sounds against the flagstones. The sky had cleared after a fashion into the pale washed blue that follows a long rain. And the light coming through the bare branches of the orchard beyond the wall was thin and clean. And had no warmth in it at all. She did not have to wait long. He came on foot. She heard him before she saw him. The soft, uneven crunch of a man walking down a country lane in good boots that were not, perhaps, his Sunday boots. And then he was at the gate and he was looking through the iron bars at her. And he was the man Astoria had described. He had freckles across the bridge of his nose. He had sandy hair that the wind had taken liberties with. He was wearing a brown coat that had been mended at one elbow with a stitch so neat that someone must have loved him to make it that neat. And he was holding in one large square hand a small posy of late asters that he'd clearly picked from a hedge on the walk up. "Miss Granger," he said before she had said anything. "I am Owen Pritchard. I am terrified. Please open the gate before I lose my nerve and walk back to the village." She opened the gate. He stepped through. He looked at the asters in his hand as though he had only just remembered them. And then he looked at the great pale bulk of the manor at the far end of the kitchen garden. And his throat moved. "Is she here?" he said. "Not yet. She will be here at noon. And he he is in the morning room. He is waiting. He knows you are coming. He knows why." Owen Pritchard closed his eyes for a moment. He did not open them at once. When he did, they were very bright. And he said in a voice that had gone a little rough at the edges. Right. Right. Lead on then, Miss Granger. I'll not embarrass her. I promise you that. Whatever this house does to me in the next hour, I'll not embarrass her. You will not embarrass her, Mr. Pritchard. You don't know that. I do, actually. He looked at her sidelong as they began to walk back along the flagged path. He had a half smile at the corner of his mouth that was the smile of a man who used his face for kindness as a matter of habit and did not know how to stop even when he was frightened. Astoria said you were formidable. He said. Did she? She said you were the only formidable person who had ever been kind to her on purpose. And that I was to thank you when I met you before I thanked anyone else. Hermione found she could not at once answer that. They walked the rest of the way to the house in silence. At the kitchen door, she handed him over to Tibby who had been instructed to take him round by the back stairs and bring him to the morning room when she gave the signal. And she went up by the front stairs herself. And she stopped halfway up to put her hand on the banister and steady her breath. The morning room door was ajar. She pushed it open without knocking. Draco was standing at the window again. He had put his coat on. He had not put a tie on. His hair was very carefully arranged in the a that suggested he had not arranged it at all and had simply pushed his hand through it more than once in the last hour. He turned when she came in. "She is on the drive," he said. "I saw the carriage. Two minutes. Owen is here. In the kitchen. Tibby has him." "Owen?" The man she "Yes. Yes, I know. I meant" He pressed his thumb briefly against the center of his lower lip. "I meant only that I'm hearing his name in my house for the first time." She nodded. She did not know what to say to that. He looked at her for a moment. Only a moment. And then he turned his head away again and looked out at the drive. And she stood near the door with her hands clasped in front of her. And they waited. Astoria came into the room ahead of her sister. That was the first surprise. Daphne Greengrass, fully 2 in taller and several degrees colder than Astoria, came in two paces behind her in a traveling coat the color of holly leaves with a hand at the small of her sister's back as though she were guiding a horse that had not been broken to crowds. And she looked when she saw Hermione with an expression of brisk unsentimental approval that Hermione would have to think about later. "Draco," Astoria said. Her voice was steady. She had clearly rehearsed the steadiness on the way up the drive. "Hermione, thank you for receiving us. May I May I have him brought in, please?" Draco crossed to the bell pull. He tugged it. He came back to stand near the hearth and he did not sit, and neither did anyone else. And the silence in the morning room had a particular held breath quality to it that Hermione would remember years later when she was telling a different story to a different person and wanted to convey what a room sounded like when four people in it were waiting for a fifth. Owen came in. He had taken off his coat. Tibby had clearly done something to his hair on the way up. He came two steps into the room and he saw Astoria and he stopped. And the look that passed between them was the look that Hermione had been working three weeks to make possible. And it was a look so unguarded that Hermione had to drop her eyes to the carpet for a moment to give them the privacy they had not asked for. When she looked up again Astoria had crossed the room to him and had taken the asters out of his hand. She had not embraced him. She had simply taken the small bunch of flowers and held them against the front of her dress. And she had turned with Owen at her shoulder now to face Draco. "This is Owen Pritchard," she said. "He is a healer at St. Mungo's. He is the man I am going to marry if I am permitted to marry anyone at all. And if I am not permitted, he is the man I am going to live in sin with in a flat above an apothecary in Bloomsbury. And I will not be moved on the point. Draco, forgive me." Draco looked at her for a long moment. He looked at her and then he looked at Owen and his eyes moved across Owen's face with the considering attention of a man making a final assessment. And Hermione watched it happen and watched what was in his face when it was done. And what was in his face was simply relief. He crossed the carpet. He did not take Astoria's hands. He bowed to her. The proper formal bow, the one with the heels together and the chin level. And he straightened and he said in a voice that had nothing of the morning's tightness in it, "There is nothing to forgive, Astoria. There has not been anything to forgive for a long time. I shall write to your father this afternoon. I shall write to mine tomorrow. I shall instruct my mother's solicitor before the end of the week. The penalty falls to the Malfoy estate. There will be no public notice beyond what cannot be avoided. The contract dies quietly. You will be at liberty by the end of the month." Astoria made a small sound. It was not a word. She brought one hand up and pressed the back of it against her mouth. And Owen, behind her, put his large square hand at the small of her back, exactly where Daphne's had been on the way in. And he did not move it. "Draco." She said when she could. "And you, Mr. Pritchard." Owen straightened. "Sir." "You hum when you write prescriptions. She told me. She told me a great many things over the years that I did not, at the time, understand were about you. But the humming I remember. He looked at Owen with an expression that was almost a smile. Do you make her happy? I try, sir. Every day. Then keep trying. Do not stop trying. She is a good woman. Better than this house deserved. Better, I think, than I deserved. Make her happy. That is the only thing I shall ever ask of you, and I shall not ask it twice. You have my word. Good. Draco inclined his head. He turned toward Daphne, who'd been standing by the door with her arms folded across her holly-colored coat, and he inclined his head to her, also. Miss Greengrass, thank you for bringing her. Thank you for being decent about it, Malfoy. Daphne said briskly. I had wagered Pansy 50 galleons you would be a horror. I owe her the money now, and I shall pay it gladly. May we go? I should like to take my sister and her young man somewhere that is not this house. You may go. I shall have the carriage brought round. We walked from the village. We shall walk back. You shall walk back with one of my umbrellas, then. The drive is filthy after the storm. I insist. Daphne smiled. A small, dry smile that had a great deal in it. And she took the umbrella that Tibby produced from nowhere in the doorway. And she gathered her sister and her sister's young man with two small gestures of her ringed hand. And they went. Astoria looked back once at Hermione from the door. She did not say anything. She did not need to. The look she gave was the look that had rested on the crown of Hermione's head in the Modista's salon. And Hermione received it standing with her hands folded in front of her, and she nodded once. The door closed. Hermione and Draco were alone in the morning room. He did not move for a long moment. He stood where he had been standing near the hearth with his hands at his sides, and he listened. They both listened to the small receding sounds of the others in the corridor and down the stairs and out across the gravel. The front door of the manor opened and closed. The carriage that had brought them, presumably waiting at the gates, made no sound at all because they were not taking it. There was only, after a moment, the small clean silence of a house that had three fewer people in it than it had had 10 minutes before. He turned his head. He looked at her. Hermione. Yes. It is done. Yes. He drew a breath. He let it out. He crossed the carpet not quickly with the slow, deliberate steps of a man who was permitting his body to do something his mind was not, at that moment, prepared to direct. And he stopped in front of her at a distance of perhaps 18 inches, which was closer than he had stood to at the Modistes and closer than he had stood to her by the fire last night. And he did not lift his hands. "May I write to you?" he said. "You said that I might write to you." "You may." "I am asking if I may also." "Yes." she said. "Tonight." "Draco, not tonight. Tomorrow, the day after, soon. May I?" "Yes." He nodded once. He looked at her face, at her mouth briefly, at her eyes. And he did not, in the end, close the 18 inches between them. He stepped back. He did the small careful step backward of a man who had decided that this was not the room and not the hour. And he said, in a voice that had gone quieter, "Go home, Hermione. You have not slept. Go home. I shall write. You shall write. I shall write." She nodded. She gathered her case from the writing table. She crossed to the door. At the threshold, she turned. He was still standing where he had been standing, with his hands at his sides, and the cold blue light of the cleared sky on the side of his face. And he was watching her go with an expression that was not the expression he had worn at any other moment in the last 3 weeks. "Draco." she said. "Yes." She opened her mouth. She closed it again. There were, she discovered, no words for what she had been about to say that were not either too small for the moment or too large for the doorway. And she settled, finally, on the smallest of the available truths. "Thank you." she said. "For being kind to him. To Owen." "He was easy to be kind to, Hermione." "Yes," she said. "He was." She turned. She went down the stairs. She crossed the hall. She stepped out into the pale washed light of the cleared afternoon, and she did not, on any account, look back at the windows of the morning room. Because she was almost certain he was standing in one of them. And she was almost certain that if she saw him there, she would not, after all, be able to make it down the long drive to the gates. He wrote on the Tuesday. The letter came to her office at half past nine in the morning, carried by a small gray owl she did not recognize. Not the Malfoy eagle owl, which was a creature of considerable presence and required a perch all to itself. This was a polite small bird with neat feet that delivered the letter onto the corner of her desk, and waited with great dignity for an answer or a biscuit. She gave it both. The biscuit came from the tin she kept for Astoria's owl. The answer she wrote standing up with one hand braced against the desk in a hand that was not entirely her own. The letter said, "Hermione, the solicitor has been. The contract is dissolved. The Greengrass family has been spared the worst of it. My mother is displeased, but has been displeased before and will survive. I am not writing to tell you any of this. I am writing because I said I would and because I have discovered that the act of writing to you appears to be the only act I am currently capable of performing without thinking in the middle of it about the inside of your wrist. I shall not, however, write about the inside of your wrist. I shall write about the weather. It is fine. D. She read it three times. She wrote in her own hand, which steadied as it went. Draco, the weather here is also fine. I am glad of the news from the solicitor. I have been thinking about a great many things which I shall not commit to a first letter. I shall say only that I have not regretted asking permission to write to you and that I am glad you have used the permission first. H. The gray owl took it with great dignity and went. They wrote through the autumn, twice a week, then three times, then four. The letters grew. They did not, for a long while, contain anything that could not have been read aloud in either of their mothers' drawing rooms. They were letters about books, about a case Hermione was preparing for the Wizengamot, about the renovation of the manor's east wing, about a recipe for a winter pear cordial that Draco's grandmother had used, and that he had attempted twice with poor results, and proposed to attempt a third time if she would be so good as to advise. And yet, beneath the polite domestic surface of them, something else was being said. It was being said in the small repetitions, in the I thought of you when I read this that began appearing in the third week that neither of them remarked on, in the way her letters began to be signed, Hermione without the H, and his to be signed Draco without the period, as though the formalities had begun of their own accord to fall away. She did not go to the Manor. He did not come to Diagon Alley. They had agreed, without ever quite agreeing it, that there would be a winter of letters first. In November, Astoria married Owen Pritchard in a small ceremony in the garden of a house in Herefordshire that belonged to a great aunt of Owen's who had taken a liking to him and decided, late in life, to be useful. Hermione planned it. She did not charge for it. There were 22 guests. The bride wore a dress the color of unripe wheat, not the wedding dress. That one had gone unworn to a Malfoy storeroom and would, in time, be cut down into something else. And she carried a bunch of late white roses that Owen had bought her that morning at a stall in Hereford and had handed to her, freckled and grinning, at the garden gate. Draco was not at the wedding. He had not been invited by mutual decision because Astoria's father had been invited and Astoria's father was still, even after all of it, the kind of man whose presence required a certain economy of pain. Hermione thought about Draco anyway. She thought about him during the vows. She thought about him during the supper. She thought about him as she walked back to her room at the inn that night with her shoes in her hand and the smell of late roses still on her wrists. She wrote to him about it the next morning. She did not write about thinking of him. She wrote about the asters Owen had picked from the hedge on the day they had all met in the morning room and how she had not at the time recognized them as a sign of what kind of man he was and how she did now. Draco wrote back. I noticed the asters. I noticed everything that morning. I noticed in particular that you stood at the door with your hands folded in front of you like a child who had been told to wait for an answer and I have not since then been able to look at the door of the morning room without seeing you in it. The manner is a difficult house for that sort of haunting. I am being haunted in approximately seven rooms. Please come and walk through them when you are ready so that the houses are not the only things in them. D. She did not go at once. She made him wait until the second week of December. She told herself while she was making him wait that she was making him wait because it was prudent because they had been apart for two months for a reason and the reason had been that this should not look to themselves or to anyone else like a thing that had begun before the contract was dissolved. And she half believed herself. She did not entirely believe herself. The other half of her knew that she was making him wait because she was afraid and that the thing she was afraid of was not him. She went on the second Sunday of December. He had sent the carriage. She had told him not to. He had sent it anyway with a note that said only humor me. And she had got into it. And the long slow drive through Wiltshire in the late afternoon light had given her the time she needed to fail to compose her face. He was waiting at the front door not in the morning room not at a window at the door. Out of doors on the top step in a coat that he had clearly put on quickly because the collar was turned wrong on one side. The light was the cold gold light of a December afternoon that has perhaps an hour left in it. And it caught the pale of his hair and the silver of the signet ring on his hand. And when the carriage stopped he came down the steps two at a time and opened the carriage door himself before the footman could reach it. He did not, however, offer his hand to help her down. He stood at the open door of the carriage and he looked up at her. And Hermione looked down at him. And they did the small ridiculous thing that two people sometimes do when they have written to each other for months and have not seen each other, and have arrived at the moment of seeing each other, and have simultaneously forgotten how the human face is supposed to work. "Hermione," he said. "Draco." "Your collar," she said, "is turned." He put his hand to his collar. He felt the wrongness. He laughed, the small surprised laugh of the orangery, except that this one had less surprise in it and more of something else. And he turned the collar right, and he held out his hand at last to help her down. And she took it. And his hand was warm. And she stepped out of the carriage onto the gravel of the drive. And she did not at once let go. He did not at once let go, either. "Come in," he said. "Before we both freeze on the gravel like a pair of statues." "Yes." "There is tea. There is the small drawing room. There is a fire that Tibby has been building since noon in case you came early. There is a great deal I have been not writing in letters because I had decided I would say it in person or not at all." "Have you decided which?" "Not yet." "Decide before tea, Draco. I should hate to spill it." He looked at her with the slow attention of a man who had been waiting two months to be looked at in return. And he said, in a voice that had gone quieter, "Come inside." The small drawing room was the room of the storm. The same two deep chairs by the hearth. The same low table. The fire had been built up, as he had said, since noon. And the light in the room was the deep red-gold of afternoon turning slowly toward evening. The shawl was not on the back of the chair this time. She missed it briefly and did not say so. He did not pour the tea at once. He stood at the hearth with his back half to her in the position he had stood the night of the storm. And he turned the signet ring on his finger twice. And he said to the fire, "I have been writing to you for two months. I have not in any of the letters said the thing. I am going to say the thing now. I am going to say it badly. I would like you to permit me to say it badly because if I wait until I can say it well, I am going to wait the rest of my life and I have already waited longer than I meant to. Draco, I am in love with you." He turned. "I have been in love with you," he said, "since the orangery, I think. Although I did not have the wit to know it at the time. I have been certain of it since the storm. I have been terrified of it since the morning of the morning room, when you stood at the door with your hands folded and asked if you might write to me. And I understood that the thing I had been feeling for three weeks was not, after all, a passing weather and that I was going to have to do something about it eventually or live with it forever. I have been doing the writing to you because I did not know how else to do anything about it without frightening you. I'm telling you now because I have come to believe that if I do not tell you now, you will go on being kind to me in letters indefinitely, and I shall die of it. And they will find me at my desk with a quill in my hand and your last letter in front of me. And Tibby will be most inconvenienced. She had not, in the course of this speech, moved. She had stood near the door with her hands at her sides, and she had watched his face, which had been the unarranged face the entire time he had spoken. And when he stopped speaking, she crossed the carpet to him without measuring the distance. She stopped in front of him at a distance of perhaps 6 in. Draco, she said, "I have been in love with you since the orangery, also. I did not know what to call it for some time. I have known what to call it since the storm. I have not said it because I was a coward and because I was waiting. And I am tired of waiting, and I do not wish to wait through tea, and I do not wish to wait through any further letters. And if you do not kiss me now, I shall go quietly mad in this drawing room, and Tibby will be even more inconvenienced than in your version." He lifted his hand. He lifted his hand very slowly, and he put it against the side of her face, his palm against her cheek, his thumb at the corner of her mouth. And his hand was warm, and it was not entirely steady. And she felt the small, unsteady warmth of it. And she closed her eyes for a moment because she had been waiting 2 months and 3 weeks and several years for it. And she had not, until that moment, known that she had been waiting that long. He bent his head. He kissed her. He kissed her once, very gently, as though he were asking a question. And when she answered the question by lifting her own hand to the back of his neck, he kissed her again, less gently. And the second kiss was the kiss of a man who had been holding a great deal in for a very long time and had been given permission to set it down. The fire moved in the grate. Somewhere in the manor, a clock began to chime the hour, and neither of them heard it. And Tibby, in the kitchen, took the kettle off the hob and decided, with the deep wisdom of a house elf who had been planning weddings in this house for 40 years and could recognize the beginning of one when she heard it, that the tea could wait. They were married the following September. Hermione did not plan the wedding. She refused on the grounds that she had planned quite enough Malfoy weddings for one lifetime and that she would like, on this one occasion, to be the bride. The ceremony was held in the orangery. 80 guests. The light at 4:00 in the afternoon was, as promised, the color of warmed honey. Astoria Pritchard, 6 months along and glowing about it, sat in the front row beside her husband who hummed very quietly throughout the vows because he could not help himself. And Hermione, who heard him from where she stood, smiled into her own bouquet because she could not help herself, either. Draco, when she reached him at the altar, took both her hands. He did not say anything at once. He looked at her, at her face, at her hair, at the small ink stain she had failed to scrub from the cuff of her left sleeve that morning because she had been writing him a note about the rings and had got distracted. And his mouth did the small dry thing at the corner. And he said, very quietly, so that only she could hear, "The cuff, Granger." "I know. I noticed it on the first day." "I know that, too. I have loved you," he said, "since the cuff." "Then say the vows, Draco, so that I can love you out loud." He said the vows. >> [clears throat] >> She said hers. Outside the orangery, the September light slid slowly down the long lawn toward the yew. And inside the orangery, the warmed honey light fell across the brick floor in the same long lozenges it had fallen in on a gray morning the autumn before. And somewhere in the back rows, Tibby, who was not, strictly speaking, permitted to attend, watched from behind a potted lemon tree with two clean handkerchiefs already wet and a third in reserve. It was, by general agreement among the 80 guests, the most beautiful wedding any of them had ever attended. It was, by quiet agreement between the bride and the groom, the only one either of them had ever needed. Five years later, the orangery had become a different room. It was, by general consent in the household, Hermione's room now, though no one had quite given it to her, and she had not quite taken it. It had simply become the place where she worked when she was at the manor, which was most days. And the long table that had once held only the dust of an absent grandmother now held a great deal else. Books, mostly. A standing inkstand in pewter that Draco had given her for her first birthday as his wife, with her initials cut into the base in a hand so small she had needed her wand to read it. A wooden box of correspondence from clients who still, after everything, would have no other planner than Granger. Malfoy, the new clients corrected themselves, and then, often as not, corrected themselves back, because Hermione had decided, with the practical good sense that had been her shield since the age of 11, that she would keep her professional name and her domestic ones separate, and would not be moved on the point. And at the far end of the table, set apart from the rest by perhaps a foot of polished wood, because she had learned the hard way what happened when one let an inkwell within reach of small hands, a low basket lined in soft green wool in which her daughter slept. Her name was Lyra. She was 18 months old. She had her mother's hair and her father's eyes and her own opinions about most things, which she expressed at considerable volume and with no regard for the working hours of either of her parents. She had, this afternoon, fallen asleep in the orangery because the warmed honey light of 4:00 had done to her what it did to everyone who entered the room. It had softened her edges and slowed her small fierce heart and put her down. And Hermione had not had the heart to move her to the nursery and so she had simply set the basket on the end of the table and gone on working. She was working on a letter. It was not a wedding letter. It was a letter to Astoria, who lived now with Owen and their two boys in a stone cottage outside Ledbury, and who had written that morning to ask whether Hermione and Draco and Lyra might come for Christmas on the understanding that the cottage was small and that Hermione would have to put up with Owen's humming, which had got worse rather than better with the addition of children to the household.
