How embarrassing. Was it that obvious? I was going to order a pizza and pass out. >> I almost had a laughing fit right then and there. >> [music] >> Hello everyone and [music] welcome back to Mr. English Channel where learning English is easy and fun. >> [music] >> I'm Emily. Hi Emily. It is so wonderful to see you today. I am feeling very happy because the weather is [music] perfect. I am happy too, Paul. I have a very good feeling about today. We have a special episode for our friends. Yes, we do. Today is all about real English. We are going to listen to a conversation between two friends, David and Anna. They are leaving work and they have a lot to talk about. Sometimes work is difficult, right? Oh, yes. Meetings, reports, and busy bosses. It can be a lot. Let's listen to David and Anna for the first time. >> [music] >> Finally, fresh air. That meeting was eternal. I thought I was going to fall asleep sitting up. I saw you struggling to keep your eyes open. How embarrassing. Was it that obvious? Only to someone who knows you. The boss didn't notice. Thank God. He was too focused on the charts. Fortunately, that projection saved us. For sure. But anyway, are you going straight home? I was going to order a pizza and pass out. I'm exhausted. Fair enough. Today's spreadsheet was a killer. What about you? Still going to the bookstore? I wanted to, but I need a break first. Did you see Marcos's face when the system crashed? >> [laughter] >> I almost had a laughing fit right then and there. He turned bright red. It was the best part of the day. We're being terrible co-workers, you know? It's what keeps us sane in that office. True enough. Man, my bus is late again. Mine is delayed, too. This sucks. You know what? Forget the bus for now. What do you suggest? There's a cafe right on the corner. Want to go grab a coffee and gossip more about work? >> [laughter] >> Deal. I need to vent about HR. Then let's go. >> [music] >> Wow, that was a great conversation. I really like David and Anna. They sound like us, Paul. I agree. They are very honest about their day. David said the meeting was eternal. That is a big word. It is. When something is eternal, it means it never ends. It goes on and on and on. Like when I wait for my laundry to finish, it feels eternal. Yes, exactly. If a meeting is 3 hours long and it is boring, it feels eternal. David was very happy to have fresh air after that. And Anna said she was going to fall asleep sitting up. I know that feeling. Have you ever done that, Emily? Maybe once in a very long history class at school. My head started to drop and then I woke up fast. It is very funny to see. David said he saw her struggling to keep her eyes open. Struggling means something is very hard to do. Right. Like if you have a very heavy bag, you are struggling to carry it. Anna was trying hard to stay awake, but she was so tired. Anna asked, "Was it that obvious?" That is a great question. Obvious means everyone can see it easily. Yes. If I wear a bright neon yellow shirt, it is obvious. You can see me from a mile away. Please don't wear a neon yellow shirt, Emily. My eyes will hurt. Don't worry, I won't. But Anna was worried the boss saw her. David said the boss didn't notice because he was focused. Focused is when you give all your attention to one thing. Like when I am eating a delicious chocolate cake, I am very focused. You are always focused on food, Paul. The boss was focused on the charts. Charts are those pictures with lines and circles that show numbers. Numbers, ugh. David said the projection saved them. A projection is like a guess about the future. Like I think we will sell many things next month. And when they talked about going home, David said he wanted to pass out. That sounds scary, but it just means to sleep very fast. Yes. When you are exhausted, you just want to go to your bed, close your eyes, and pass out. You are not just tired, you are super tired. I feel exhausted after I go to the gym. I come home, I sit on the sofa, and I pass out for 20 minutes. David also said he wanted to order a pizza. I love that. Pizza makes every bad day better. It really does. Anna said, "Fair enough." That is a very natural expression. It means I understand or that is a good reason. If you tell me, "Paul, I cannot go to the park because it is raining," I can say, "Fair enough." It makes sense. Exactly. Then she said the spreadsheet was a killer. A killer in this way means it was very difficult or painful. Like a killer workout at the gym or a killer exam at school. It takes all your energy. Poor Anna and David. But then they talked about Marcos. Marcos had a bad day because the system crashed. Oh, no. When a computer or system crashes, it stops working. It just dies. Everything disappears. That is the worst feeling. David said Marcos turned bright red. His face was the color of a tomato. Because he was embarrassed or maybe angry. I turn bright red when I have to sing in front of people. >> [laughter] >> I want to see that, Paul. Anna said she had a laughing fit. This is when you cannot stop laughing. You try to be quiet, but you just keep laughing. >> [laughter] >> Those are the best laughs. But she felt like a terrible co-worker. Co-workers are the people you work with. But David said it keeps them sane. Being sane means having a healthy mind. If you don't laugh at work, you might go a little crazy. So true. Laughing with friends is the best medicine. But then the bus was late and delayed. Delayed is a very common word at airports or bus stations. It means it is not coming at the right time. It is behind schedule. If the bus is at 5:00, but it arrives at 5:30, it is delayed. David said, "This sucks." That is a very informal way to say this is bad. Yes, it is very common between friends. My phone broke, this sucks. Or it's raining on my birthday, this sucks. But David had a better idea. He said, "Forget the bus. Let's go to a cafe." I love that idea. He wanted to gossip. Gossip is when you talk about other people or things that happened. Usually, it's a little bit of a secret. And Anna said she needed to vent. This is a very important word. To vent means to talk about your problems so you can feel better. You let the steam out of your head. Yes. If you are angry about a problem at work, you talk to a friend, you vent, and then you feel relaxed. Anna wanted to vent about HR. That stands for human resources. They are the people in an office who take care of the employees. Maybe the HR people gave her too much work. Well, if you are enjoying this conversation, don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and share it with a friend who is learning English. Yes, it helps us a lot. And if you are still listening, comment bus below. We want to know who is practicing with us today. I wonder how many people have bus stories. I have many. One time I fell asleep and missed my stop. I woke up in a different city. >> [laughter] >> Emily, that is so funny. Did you have to take the bus back? Yes, it took 2 hours. It was a very long night. I was definitely exhausted after that. See? That is a great example of being exhausted. Now, let's look at the words David and Anna used again. They are very useful for every day. I like straight home. David asked, "Are you going straight home?" This means going home immediately. No stops at the store, no stops at the park. I usually go straight home after work because I'm hungry. I want my dinner. >> [laughter] >> Of course you do. And what about laughing fit? I remember a time at a wedding. My brother made a joke and I had a laughing fit during the quiet part. Oh, no. Was it obvious? It was very obvious. My mom was not happy. She looked at me with a very serious face, but that made me laugh more. >> [laughter] >> That is always how it happens. When you must be quiet, you laugh more. David also mentioned the system crashed. This happens to me with my phone sometimes. I'm writing a message and then boom, black screen. That really sucks, especially if it's a long message. You have to start again from the beginning. David and Anna are good friends because they help each other stay sane. I think we do that for our listeners, too, Paul. I hope so. Learning a language can be difficult. Sometimes you feel like you are struggling, but we are here to make it fun. Yes. Remember what David said, it's what keeps us sane. Talking and laughing is the best way to learn. I really like the ending of their chat. David suggests coffee and gossip. Coffee is like a hug in a cup. A hug in a cup. That is very poetic, Paul. But it's true. A warm drink makes you feel relaxed. And it gives you time to vent. If you hold your problems inside, you feel stressed, but if you talk about them, they feel smaller. That's a very good point. When Anna vents about HR, she will probably feel much better when she goes home later. And David will get his pizza and pass out. It sounds like a perfect evening for both of them. It really does. I think we should listen to the conversation one more time. Now that we know all these great words, it will be even easier to understand. That is a fantastic idea. Let's hear David and Anna again. >> [music] >> Finally, fresh air. That meeting was eternal. I thought I was going to fall asleep sitting up. >> [laughter] >> I saw you struggling to keep your eyes open. How embarrassing. Was it that obvious? Only to someone who knows you. Want to go grab a coffee and gossip more about work? >> [laughter] >> Deal. I need to vent about HR. Then let's go. >> [music] >> They are such a fun pair of friends. I am glad they are going to get coffee together. Me, too. It is much better than waiting for a delayed bus. So, Paul, what did we learn today? We learned eternal for something very long. And to pass out for sleeping very quickly when you are exhausted. We also learned obvious for things that are easy to see and to struggle when something is difficult. Don't forget fair enough and this sucks. Those are very helpful when talking with friends. And my favorite, to vent. It is so important to talk about our feelings. And bright red, like Marcos's face or mine when I have to sing. >> [laughter] >> We had a very busy day today, didn't we? We did, but it wasn't a killer because I am talking with you, Emily. Aw, that is so sweet, Paul. Thank you. I feel the same way. Well, I think that is all the time we have for our episode today. It is. We hope you enjoyed this real English conversation. It is a great way to learn. If you want to practice, try using one of these words today. Maybe tell a friend you are exhausted or that a movie was eternal. Yes. And tell us in the comments, what makes you turn bright red? Is it a joke? Is it speaking in public? We want to know. We love reading your stories. It is our favorite part of the day. Before we go, please subscribe to Mr. English channel. [music] It really helps us grow. And give this video a big like if you learned something new today. Share it with your family and friends, too. Let's help everyone learn English together. Thank you for listening, everyone. [music] You are doing a great job with your English. Yes. Keep practicing [music] every day. You are getting better and better. Until next time. Goodbye, Emily. Bye for now, Paul. Bye, everyone. See you in the next episode. Bye-bye. >> [music]
