Dr AbdulRahman: Hello. The Host: Hello Doctor, last time we stopped at the transition
from thinking to reasoning since this transition is important and
we’re in need of reasoning in our lives... Dr AbdulRahman: Shall we review
why it's important? Do you remember? Why is it important to transition
from thinking to reasoning even though thinking in itself
is better than stopping at sensing? The Host: Because we will start implementing,
we won’t stay lost our entire life- Dr AbdulRahman: Lost with a headache
while there are many references, and I don’t know where I stand so
I need to transition to reasoning The Host: But why do people fear transitioning
from the stage of thinking to reasoning? Dr AbdulRahman: Honestly,
not only in this particular transition but there are so many barriers
that prevent the human from transitioning from any process to another and I summarize it in
the trilogy of Ignorance (Jahl = Jeem, Haa, Laam) Jeem = Jahl (Ignorance) Haa = Hawa (Whim) Laam = La’eb (Play)/
Lagho (Garrulity)/ Laho (Distraction) -which I call the set of heedlessness- What is it that prevents a
person from transitioning? Either he’s ignorant: of what? He’s either ignorant of the importance
of this step,or of the danger of his state, The Host: or he doesn't
know where he’s going- Dr AbdulRahman: Exactly, he’s ignorant of what he needs
to learn to transition to the next stage so first “Ignorance” Second is “Whim”:
Relaxation and comfort etc.. “What I know is better than what I don't” Third: the set of heedlessness
“Play, garrulity and distraction” You’ll find a lot of youth when asked
“why didn't you educate yourself?” “Is there time?” [he’d say]
- How do you spend your time? “I spent nearly 6 hours playing video games 4 hours on YouTube and
2 hours reading pointless novels 5 hours on Fortnite and
barely 2 hours sleeping” The Host: PUBG Dr AbdulRahman: Of course, PUBG!
So this set of heedlessness led people astray from important things
So this in brief is the trilogy of ignorance, whim, and heedlessness that prevents people
from transitioning to the next stage and this is a problem, whether it’s from
Sensing to Thinking or Thinking to Reasoning and while in Reasoning it prevents application
of knowledge all because of the same reasons The Host: Okay, it’s possible that I’m aware of all this
but I still feel that there is big hurdle in front of me preventing me from transitioning
to the Reasoning stage, and that I’m still afraid Dr Abdul Rahman: Great, we’ll discuss
a very important matter here Let’s give a rational response to those
afraid of transitioning -and this requires some focus- If I’m sitting right here and it's causing me problems,
what would be the percentage of me feeling anxious? The Host: Big, of course Dr Abdul Rahman: It’s 100%
I’m in it right now I need to move but I’m scared if I transition,
things won't be 100% clear Okay, reasonably and logically which is better:
to stay in the 100% or go to a place that is 50-50% The Host: I go to 50-50% Dr Abdul Rahman: Of course! The problem with people is that they say “let me stay in the 100% that I know, better than to going to an unknown 50-50%” The Host: He’s afraid that it might be 100% wrong Dr Abdul Rahman: Afraid because he doesn't know!
Yet you know, with certainty which stage you’re in There’s a little complicated phrase that goes:
“If I am afraid of doing then I did what I am afraid of” Once more: “If I am afraid of doing then I did what I am afraid of” What does that mean? That if I’m afraid of taking this step
Then I stayed stationary, so what did I do? I stayed in the same place that’s scaring me
so if I’m afraid of doing, then I actually did what I am afraid of! which is staying where I am
One of the amazing pieces I have read, summing this up is, Al Shafee’s poem, or rather ones attributed to him
Because there are debates whether all poems in his collection were really written by him or not
Listen and get mesmerized... He speaks about the negative impact of remaining where you’re not given your rights and worth yet, you stay there
So change and move to a better place. He says: "There is no peace in settlement for the intelligent, the courteous –
So leave homelands, and go to foreign fields" This place isn’t giving you your rights,
you can’t find yourself in it then leave your homeland and go to foreign lands “Wander! You’ll leave ones and meet others,
And strive! In that is the sweetness of life.” then he gives you tangible examples: “I’ve found that still water stagnates,
if it flows it’s sweetest, and if not, it sours” If you want to perform ablution it’s with running water,
you can't perform ablution with stagnant water, it's considered impure. “I’ve found that still water stagnates,
if it flows it’s sweetest, and if not, it sours” “And if the sun halted in its course,
Humans would get jaded, arabs and foreigners” When I used to work in the US, I would get cases
where a person hates the color white, why? Because it’d be snowy for 6 months straight in some states.
So they are bored of white “If the sun halted in its course,
Humans would get jaded, Arabs and foreigners,
And If not for moving, lions wouldn’t prey...” Have you ever seen a deer waltzing towards a lion
asking it to “prey on me”? No. The lionnes, the female, goes out to hunt
Since we mentioned lions.. Dr Abdul Rahman: Who goes hunting,
the lion or lioness? The Host: The lioness. Dr Abdul Rahman:a lot of people think the lion
is the one doing everything, but in reality the lioness is the one that goes hunting
and the lion protects her with his roar he’d be a few meters away, and if he senses danger,
he roars, driving the hyenas away from her. The Host: this example might be exploited by husbands,
to make their wives work while they stay home. Dr AbdulRahman: Well, we want him to be a man, not a lion… the lion is an animal at the end of the day,
we want men to be men.. and by the way since we mentioned this,
it’s unfortunate that in our slang- the term for lioness is considered offensive, When a lady is called a lioness,
that alludes she’s of ill repute. I have no idea where this originated from!
Anyways…. “If the lion doesn’t leave his den he can’t hunt,
and if the arrow doesn’t leave the bow it won’t strike” “Gold dust is as the sand, abandoned in its places,
and oud is a type of firewood in its ground” “If one is displaced, it becomes a valued desire .
If the other is displaced, it’s honoured like gold.” In his other poem he says: “Leave a land where you’re oppressed,
and do not grieve leaving family behind, For crude Amber is fecal in its source (whale’s intestines)
and in alienation it’s worn on the neck. and Kohl is a type of stone you look at in nature..
In its land it’s left by the roads, when it emigrates it gains all praise,
and, thus, it’s carried between the eyelid and the eye Beautiful words, it refutes the slogan
“Hold on to your homeland”!! No sir, home is where you can preserve your rights
and obey Allah freely. Detach yourself from the limited space created by
man-made borders, Allah’s land is vast Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves -
[the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land."
They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?"...(An-Nisa)(97) This could bother some people,
“What? What about nationalism…etc?” The place where you find yourself most productive,
is the place you will be asked about on Judgement day It's useless to remain where you’re enslaved,
unable to achieve anything under the pretense of “My land etc…” We have the Prophet -Peace be upon him- as a great example
where he left his beloved home to where he would institute the caliphate… There’s another thing to point out the importance of moving… Have you ever heard of “Bed Sores”? People who remain in bed for prolonged amounts of time and need a nurse to turn them over? Do you know why?
If they were to remain in one position for a long time, the skin would start to shed else known as sloughing,
So what happens? I will explain this from a psychological perspective:
The brain receives signals from the organ “Mr brain, there is a part of the body that’s unmovable and dysfunctional. What do we do? The brain starts to stimulate it
by sending signals, “If you do not move, I will take action”...
That manifests in the sensation we call tingling. Hence you shuffle around. Do you notice it?
When we sit for so long. But what if it didn’t move? A stronger signal is sent
making you feel numb, and if there is no response, the brain takes measures to prevent
blood circulation and nerve signaling The Host: The organ doesn’t receive blood Dr AbdulRahman: It doesn’t, and that causes “gangrene”
The body expels that unmovable organ As if the divine message in this existence says:
“The organ that does not move, dies” Thus, if you do not move along the flow of universal laws,
you will be held back while the universe goes on which takes me to an important point, which is feeling alienated.
Alienated from whom? From myself? I am a stranger to myself, not to those around me
I didn’t make progress today... Today, I was supposed to accomplish something new,
Yet I remained stationary In short, my message to those afraid of taking a step:
as long as you remain in your place, you’ll be left behind. and the gap grows every day,
until a day comes where you give up and say “I’m useless” When in reality, every day you breath
is a useful day as long as you’re not resting underground,
the sun has not yet risen from the west,
and the beast has not yet emerged, that means you are still capable of achieving something
but the question remains “What do you want to do?” This will take us to the matter of “I intend on figuring it out so what should I do?” The Host: Prior to this Dr., we established that Reasoning is necessary,
but to further clarify, what is meant by Reasoning in this context? Dr Abdul Rahman: Alright, we said Thinking is: Deconstructing
and what did we mention after deconstructing? The Host: We piece them all together. Dr Abdul Rahman: The act of reconnecting things is “Reasoning”
To reason (A’ql) means grasping, linking, and connecting “Reasoning” is collecting scattered information and concluding with
“This is what I know, the ideas are organized and categorized This idea is located here,
and this one there. That’s the neatly packed suitcase” That is “Reasoning” The Host: How do I ensure I’m on the right path?
That I “reasoned”? in the context of this discussion Dr Abdul Rahman: Lovely, this will take us to the next topic
-we can touch upon it now, and continue in the next session- Which is: how do I know which reference is the right one? To have a methodology that will
clarify the rightness of my actions Doesn’t everyone claim to be right?
The hindu claims to be right the buddhist, secularist, libertarian, nationalists
humanitarian, and atheists, they all claim to be right... How should I know? Thus, I need a reference,
a scholarly method, that proves to me-that this is the agreed upon method amongst the rational people on the planet, and that this is the method that will direct the human to the Truth and I believe further discussion is needed,
So let’s do that in the next session, in sha Allah We need to delve deeper into “How do I know I have reasoned?
How do I ensure that I understood?” The Host: Will we set like standards upon which I can measure and decide whether my actions are reasonable or not? Dr Abdul Rahman: Exactly, to further clarify:
“What does the mind need to realise that it is correct?” Since it is Ramadan, your homework is to trace the
root word (A’ql) “ُTo Reason” in the Qur’an! Trace that root word in the Qur’an, from cover to cover
and with the availability of search engines, you can simply type in the search engine
or search based application the word “عقل” the results will show it all
and we will discuss this tomorrow in sha Allah The Host: Alright, thank you Dr. Dr Abdul Rahman: See you The Host: Thank you Dr Abdul Rahman: You’re welcome
